NCAA March Madness pool - Final Wrap Up

 That was some kind of Championship game.  I’ll be honest.  I was about 75-80% checked out of the title game at half time.  I figured that North Carolina being up 15 and looking dominant, Kansas would make it a little closer, but North Carolina would eventually figure things out and win comfortably.  That didn’t really happen.  Kansas wiped away most of the lead by the time of the first media break.  It was impressive.  So, good job to the people that picked Kansas.

As I always say, you aren’t really competing in this pool against everyone else.  You are only competing against the people that picked the same champion as you.  This championship game illustrated two schools of thought on how to win.  One is to pick a favorite, and hope you do well enough in the earlier rounds that you are at the top of the standings by the time the final rolls around.  The other is pick a dark horse and hope that they win because you are against much, much fewer people.  Picking North Carolina was a particularly inspired choice that almost paid off.  Honestly, only one person took any #8 seed to win the pool.  It almost worked.

That’s not to say North Carolina wasn’t important to winning this pool, even though they didn’t win the actual pool.  When the brackets came out, I said that the person that wins the pool is going to be the person that gets the most points out of the East region.  Baylor didn’t seem that strong, and there were a lot of decent contenders to come out of that region.  As it turns out, I was right.  Mike W. was one of 3 people that got the most points in this region with 23.  Turns out that was the region in which he performed the best.  He got 3 of the 4 Sweet 16 teams, North Carolina in the Elite 8 and North Carolina in the Final 4.  I would argue that those two wins for North Carolina (in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8) were the difference for Mike W. in winning the pool.

To further prove my point about only playing against people that picked the same winner as you, the top 20 finishers in the pool all had Kansas winning it all.  As a matter of fact, no person that didn’t pick Kansas finished ahead of anyone that did.  The worst bracket with Kansas winning was better than the best bracket without Kansas.  That’s pretty stark.  Keep that in mind for next year.  The single most important game to pick is the finals.  Work backwards from there.

I told you that Mike W. had the best record in the East region, but I think some of the other regions had some interesting things going on with them as well.

Take, for instance, the West region (The Duke region).  In every region, there are 32 points possible.  Nobody got all 32 in any of the regions, but one person did manage to get 31 in this region, and it was definitely not someone you might expect.  Owen R. managed to only miss the Michigan State / Davidson game in this region.  He got the entirety of the region right otherwise.  This fact is made all the more impressive when you look at how he did elsewhere.  In the Midwest Region (Kansas), he got 7 points total.  In the other two regions, he managed 4 & 4 points respectively.  He also had Jacksonville State winning the entire thing.  He finished in a tie for 140^th place.  Still, VERY impressed with the West regional picking from Owen R.  If he can build off that insight in years to come he’ll be a force to reckon with.

In the South Region, we also almost had a perfect bracket.  Becky H. only missed Loyola-Chicago / Ohio State.  I think kept her alive for a good long time, but she suffered the same fate as Owen in that she couldn’t replicate it in other regions (13, 10 & 7 respectively).  Still, a showing worth commendation.

I get to crow a little about the Midwest region, because the entry that had the best showing there with 27 points was Otis L., which is the pseudonym I used to enter as one of our cats.  For the life of me, I don’t remember who I picked in that region or why, but whatever I did seemed to have worked.  The entry I did under my name I went entirely by my system.  This Otis L. entry I think I went more by feel.  I’m not sure…  I filled it out a long time ago.  Still, not bad.

I’m considering next year of something like if you get the most points in a region, you get $25 or something.  Make the overall prize pool less, but more people would win something.  Could be fun, especially if you aren’t anywhere close to winning anything overall.  We’ll see.  I’ve given prized for the people that have finished last a few times in the past, so maybe this could be an interesting wrinkle.

So, if this year’s tournament seemed a little more like madness, you are pretty much correct.  Since the tournament games typically come in groups of 4, I like to use 1 upset out of 4 as a rule of thumb to determine if a tournament is too chalky or not.  This year, 21 games had the lower seed upsetting the higher seed.  A lot of that was St. Peter’s and North Carolina, but there were some others like Miami-Florida, Iowa State and Michigan that made things interesting as well.  That made me happy.

One more fun fact about the winner, Mike W.: at the end of Day 1 he had gone 7/16 and was sitting in 202^nd place.  He was in 150^th place after round 1.  Round fun is maybe the most fun because there are a ton of upsets and as long as your main teams survive, you are OK, but if this doesn’t shine a light on how little it means in the grand scheme of things, I don’t know what will.

That, and a worthy team won.  In my final weekly rankings, I had Kansas #4, so one spot lower than the committee.  I know we have at least a couple of die-hard Kansas fans in the pool, so I’m happy for them and I’m happy for the people that won.
