This is much more like it. For those that didn’t know, I enter a bunch of brackets from people that I find on-line. I also enter a bracket only by the seeds. I won last year doing this, and I had both the Ken Pom bracket and Gutless Bracket, which were sitting at 1st and 3rd going into the Final 4. I was of 2 minds about this. I felt really, really uncomfortable if I wound up winning my own pool 2 years in a row. That’s super sketch. I also famously don’t like chalk to win anything.
The first game knocked out Auburn, so that wiped out the
Gutless bracket, since they were the #1 overall seed. I was quite happy about that. However, Ken Pom had Duke over Florida in the
Finals, so I was still in 1st place.
I have to admit that I was sleepwalking through the second
half of that Duke / Houston game. It
looked like so many other games I’ve seen in the last few weeks where one team
gets up double digits and more or less stays there until the clock runs out. I mean, they were up 9 with 3:00 on the
clock. I wasn’t even paying that close
of attention until they stole the inbounds pass and cut the lead to one. It’s like it happened all of a sudden.
I know I’ve written this a million times and it a pet peeve
of mine – YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR FREE THROWS!!!!!! Duke missed the front end of a 1-1, the refs
called pretty sketchy foul on Cooper Flagg, and then Houston made it’s free
throws to take the lead. My jaw was on
the floor at this point. You don’t win
games like that if you are Houston without some help from Duke, and you can
make a pretty good case that they choked. But Houston made the big shots and
steals when they needed them.
Which means that today is my other favorite day of the pool –
the day that Duke gets knocked out.
Unfortunately for me, it took my bracket that was in 1st
place and knocked it out, so I can’t win with that bracket either.
It also broke the streak of favorites winning every game, which
I also love. Sure we still have a 1 v 1
in the Finals, but they were the overall #3 and #4 seeds in the tournament, so
better late than never.
Wait, it doesn’t end there…
Because Auburn and Duke both lost, almost all the scenarios where the
pool ends in a tie are also gone. There
is still a chance for a 4th/5th place tie, but I’ll take
that at this point.

$1360 - $200 for the $50 going to the 4 regional winners.
1st place = $1160 * .45 = $522
2nd place = $1160 * .25 = $290
3rd place = $1160 * .15 = $174

5th place = $1160 * .05 = $58

excited about the tournament again. See? Upsets make things better. Nobody roots for Goliath.
