2026 NCAA pool wrap-up

All right.  I finally have some time to digest the pool and I looked up past winning scores for my pool.  I have the data going back about 10 years, and the winner this year got more points than any of the other previous winners – by a pretty wide margin.  Jim Del. wound up winning the pool with a whopping 170 / 192 points.  The previous high before that was last year, when Tyler C. won with 161.

You might think that the tournament is getting easier to predict, and that may be true, but the argument against that is that Jim Del. just mopped the floor with the field.  Second place had 145 points, so Jim won by 25.  The next biggest blowout was the Charlotte N. year when Connecticut beat San Diego state and she won by 19 points.  Most years it’s within 5.

So, how did Jim Del. manage to do this.  Well, he didn’t start out particularly well.  He was stuck way down in 144^th place after the first round.  He was all the way down in 197^th after the first Saturday.  However, he did a few things that I focus on during this blog.  First, even though he wasn’t picking particularly well early on, almost none of his picks that lost were going any further than the next round, so he always had close to maximum points available.  That, and his net points numbers looked pretty healthy.

I would argue (and I do) that there are single most important thing to do in this pool is get the winner right, but you won’t know if you did that until the end.  While the pool is going on, the best thing you can have going for you is the ability to win points in as many games as possible.  As Jim did, you may not have picked well, but if the team you picked that lost was just going to lose in the next round anyway, you are not in that bad of shape.  It’s when you lose a Sweet 16 team in the opening round, or a Final 4 team in the Sweet 16 that you get killed because then you have no chance to get points in those games.  You only are able to root for whatever side makes up less ground on you (which is usually the underdog).

So, One the Elite 8 rolled around, most of Jim’s picks hit.  He went 7/8 in the Elite 8, 4/4 in the Final 4, 2/2 in the Finals and had Michigan winning.  That’s how you lap the field.  Great job picking.  It’s a standard that probably won’t be matched very soon.

For those that didn’t win this year, I hope I made the pool interesting for as long as you remained alive.  I try to make it as interesting as possible.  I threw in a wrinkle this year with calculating the weighted probability of winning after the Sweet 16.  I might try expanding that next season.  Who knows?  I’ve got about 11 months to figure it out.
