Bowl Pool Finals

It seemed like there was little doubt about the outcome of the National Championship game tonight from about midway through the first half on.  That was bound to be great news for the people that took Clemson.  Honestly, that game was only moderately interesting from a neutral point of view.  It was probably worse than a lot of the games this Bowl season, but if you were a person who was going to make or lose money based on the results, it was probably a good game.  If you were going to win with Clemson, you didn’t have to sweat out whether they were going to win.  If you took Alabama, you never had much hope that they were going to win, so you had plenty of time to absorb the loss.

The only really interesting thing about this game was the tie-breaker to decide 3rd place.  Remember that if Clemson won, 3rd would be decided by a tiebreaker.  I personally hate tiebreakers, but you kind of need to have one.  In this pool, the O/U was 62 points.  The final score was 60 total points, but Clemson could have very easily scored in garbage time at the end of that game to push the number over.  My guess is that Dan Du. was screaming at the TV for Clemson to score at the end.  I know I would have been.  Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Ally H, they didn’t, so Ally H. takes 3rd place and $66.

Second place goes to the person that was leading the pool pretty much throughout, Dylan B.  Dylan B. had a pretty sizeable lead going into the last 2 days of games, getting as high as a 78.91% chance to win the pool after the Sun Bowl.  Unfortunately from there, he limped in going 4 for the next 10 games, winning only 58 total points and losing 152.  That was a pretty big crash, but he had logged enough points to pull out 2nd place overall despite that bad run.  That was good enough for $99.

First place went to someone that I really didn’t pay a lot of attention to.  Mike S. finished the pool with 27 wins (tied for 1st).  That often is how it goes, which makes people think that maybe the point distribution doesn’t matter.  In this case it did because the other person with 27 wins was Jason S. and he finished in 14th place.  Mike S. had the 3rd best chance of winning when I calculated initial probabilities with a 5.29% chance.  Along the way, he managed to survive no less than 6 games where if he had lost, he would have been mathematically eliminated.  Those 6 were:

1.       Oregon in the Redbox Bowl (+35 points)
2.       Northwestern in the Holiday Bowl (+16 points)
3.       Iowa in the Outback Bowl (+28 points)
4.       Kentucky in the Fiesta Bowl (-18 points)
5.       Ohio State in the Rose Bowl (+37 points)
6.       Clemson in the Championship Game (+30 points)

I find it interesting that he needed Kentucky to pull the upset of Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl despite having picked Penn State to win for 18 points.  However, most people had Penn State for much, much more, so that loss moved him up in the standings.  Also, he lost 39 points on Georgia, but that didn’t make any difference in his chances as winning at all.  Strange what comes out when you look at the numbers.

Anyway, congratulations to Mike S.  He gets $165 for his efforts this year.
