Final set and the dreaded tie-breaker makes a comeback

That game was a little better.  I was pretty excited that we were going to see an upset, especially when the game was tied at 56.  However, once UConn got up 10, I didn’t really see a good path for Alabama to come back.  I agreed that Alabama probably needed to shoot 14/15 3s to win, and they were on pace in the first half.  They cooled off a little in the 2^nd half and that made all the difference.  They wound up with only 11 3s.  Tough break, Alabama.  They had a good run.

So, what does that mean for the pool?  Well, we are down to 11 people that cane win something.  Wait, you are saying, there are only 5 payouts, and 2 ways the tournament can end, shouldn’t there be 10 (or less?).  Ideally, yes.  However, it turns out that 2 people can tie for 5^th place, which gives us that extra one person.

Here are the scenarios that can play out in what should be a pretty good Championship game:

If Connecticut wins:

Winner of tie-breaker between Guillermo V. and me wins 1^st place.

Loser of tie-breaker between Guillermo V. and me wins 2^nd place.

Brad R. wins 3^rd place.

Mike N. wins 4^th place.

Winner of tie-breaker between John Mack and Luis B. wins 5^th place.

 

If Purdue wins:

Howard S. #2 wins 1^st place.

Dan L. #2 wins 2^nd place.

Micheal S. #2 wins 3^rd place.

Chris L. #2 wins 4^th place.

Ryan G. wins 5^th place.

 

I’m a little torn on who I should be rooting for in this game.  I entered a bracket based entirely on Ken Pom’s offensive efficiency rankings, and that bracket could win.  It’s hard to feel too good about that, since I didn’t actually put any of my own knowledge into those picks.  Plus, it looks pretty bad to win your own pool (which is why I try to be as transparent as possible).  Also, I don’t really like UConn, and I think Purdue winning is a much better story.  Thirdly, I am a little over all the talking heads slurping UConn.  I don’t find Danny Hurley’s antics on the sidelines charming.  I find them childish.  On the other hand, if UConn wins, my Dad will win 3^rd place, and that is pretty cool.

So, I’ve already reached out to the people involved in the potential tiebreakers for their scores.  I think next year, I will move that ask date up to before the Final 4 so it’s a little more fair.  I really don’t like tie-breakers.  My tie-breaker score is 136.
