After several weeks of games, we are finally down to one
last game. Only a few people are alive
to win anything, so I'm not sure just how many people are actually still
reading this thing.
Before I get to anything about the games themselves, some of
you may now that I am currently in Phoenix to take in these last 3 games of the
season. This is the 3rd time I've been
to the Final 4, including last year. The
previous 2 times, I went when they were held in Houston because my in-laws live
there and we go to visit them. This
time, my Dad, my brother and I decided that Phoenix was a drivable distance, so
we rented a house and made our way East.
My initial impressions of the games this year versus when
I've been to games in Houston is this:
If the NCAA never decides to have another Final 4 in Phoenix, that will
be too soon. For a huge stadium that is
in the middle of nowhere, there is no signage and there is no obvious place to
park. We are staying across town, so we
left at noon. The gates opened at 1:00. Tipoff was at 3:15. We barely got to our seats before tipoff.
In Houston, we were able to drive to the arena, find parking
somewhere and take, maybe a 5 minute walk to the gate, easily moved through
security and ticketing and got into the building. In Phoenix, we passed any number of lots that
were literally 50-90% empty with no signage whatsoever on how to actually get
into them. There is a shopping center
next to the stadium that his a TON of parking.
We saw a sign that said, "Parking $20", so we joined the line
of cars trying to get into the lot. From
what I could tell, there was 1 lane of cars to get people into the lot, except
there was probably about 3-4 lanes of cars worth trying to get into the same
place. Once we got a little further, the
people that were there closed off some half filled lots and directed us to
another lot that was $40. At that point,
we were probably waiting in our car about 45 minutes to an hour to go maybe 300
yards. It was as disorganized a set up
as I have ever seen. When we did
actually get into a parking lot, it was literally 90% empty and really close to
the entrance.
From there we joined the huge crowd in line. This was the security line. It probably took another 30-45 minutes
waiting in the sun just to go through security.
I don't know if they were unprepared or short staffed, but it didn't
seem like getting people through security in a timely manner was much of a
priority.
But wait, our ordeal wasn't over. Getting through security just got us on the
grounds. We still weren't in the
building yet. As near as I could tell,
there are only 3 ways to get in to the building. We had to join YET ANOTHER throng of people
to get through the gates to find our seats.
There were probably 1000 people, and there was only 3 doors open to
funnel everyone through. For those that
have never been to a final 4, some of the tickets are e-tickets, so you don't
actually have any physical ticket that someone can scan and let you in. They do this so they can control the secondary
ticket sales market. So, instead of
scanning tickets and getting people in quickly, you have to give your credit
card to a guy who prints out your tickets at the gate and hands them to you. That takes time. So, we managed to get into the building in time
to make the opening tip off, but I'm guessing that there were a lot of angry
people that didn't.
From there, we found our seats and had a pretty good time at
the games. They were much better games
than last year. You had a lot of the
same problems with any venue this large.
If you went to get food at normal times (halftime, between games, etc.)
you were going to wait upwards of 45 minutes to an hour. The food preparers were totally unprepared
for the amount of people that were going to be there. My brother wanted to get a t-shirt, so he
waited in a line for about 30 minutes only to be told that the t-shirt he
wanted was sold out in his size.
From almost every aspect, the University of Phoenix stadium
and surrounding area seems designed to make the fan experience as uniformly
terrible as possible. Contrasting this
to Houston, we never had any problems with parking, ticketing, security,
navigating around the arena, etc. All in
all, Phoenix is, in my opinion totally ill-equipped to handle this event and
should never host one again.
Now that I've got that off my chest, the games were really
good. I thought Gonzaga was going to run
away with it in the second half, but South Carolina came all the way back and
even took the lead for a small amount of time.
That made us kind of nervous, since my brother needed Gonzaga to win it
all to have a chance at the money. As
I've mentioned before, no one had South Carolina in the Final 4 so no one lost
points due to this game. People that
were eliminated were people that had someone other than Gonzaga, Oregon or
North Carolina winning it all, but still had gathered enough points to be near
the top of the standings.
The second game wound up being even better, I thought. I was pulling for North Carolina. They seemed to have Oregon at arms distance
for most of the game (5-7 points), but they did everything in their power to
choke the game away. They started
playing the "prevent" offense with about 5 minutes to go. I can't stand this strategy. It's the one where the team with the lead
stops running their normal offense, dribbles the ball around for 20-25 seconds
and takes a rushed, bad shot to avoid the shot clock violation. This almost inevitably leads to no points,
and an opportunity for the other team to crawl back into the games. It's terrible, and it did exactly what I
thought it would do. Oregon got close in
the last few minutes. It was a 3-point
game with a few seconds left, and North Carolina fouled Oregon to keep them
from shooting a 3-pointer to tie it. So,
they cut it to 1 with about 4 seconds left.
From there, North Carolina proceeded to miss free throw after free
throw. The only thing that prevented
them from going down in history as choking dogs was the fact that Oregon
couldn't grab a defensive rebound, so North Carolina could eventually run out
the clock. It was like backing into a
win for North Carolina, but a win none the less.
That means the finals is Gonzaga vs. North Carolina. You would think that a lot of people would
have picked that given that it is a 1 vs 1.
but only 8 people have this matchup, of which only Daisy N. #2 and Mike
S. #2 are eliminated from any of the 4 payouts.
So, here's the matrix now:

Here are the breakdowns for the finals. Either way it plays out, there will be a
tie-breaker needed.
If Gonzaga wins:
1st place: Winner of tie breaker between Kirt R. #1 (Over
130) & Jeff S. (Under 130)
2nd place: Loser of tie breaker between Kirt R. #1 (Over
130) & Jeff S. (Under 130)
3rd place: Ken P.
4th place: Dustin B. #2
If North Carolina wins:
1st place: Larry G. #3
2nd place: Winner of tie breaker between Dan Dz. (Over 166) and
John M. #1 (Under 166)
3rd place: Loser of tie breaker between Dan Dz. (Over 166) and
John M. #1 (Under 166)
4th place: Eric V.
That's it. We are
going to try to go to Fan Fest downtown today.
I hope that it is run better than the UofP stadium is. The way that place is run is a disgrace.
Good luck!!!!!
