I'm not sure how many of you actually watched the Beef
O'Brady's Bowl today, but Ohio was winning the game at the start of the 4th
quarter. If you were watching, you might
have been sweating this one out a
bit. As it turned out, East Carolina
managed to pull away at the end and win comfortably. I think they even covered the 14 point spread
at the end.
What that means for our little pool is that we earned a
total of 1677 points (average: 18.84).
That means there was a lot of movement in the standings, and that we
have a new name at the top of the leader board.
The good news is that we no longer have anyone that hasn't
won a game. On the other end, we still
have the one person (Huki Julie) that has managed to go 5/5 so far. Given that 4 of the 5 games resulted in the
favorite winning the game, it should come as no surprise that 35 people have
4/5. That's almost half the field.
The biggest droppers in the standings were Greg F. (#17 -
#51) who had East Carolina, but for only 2 points and Jay H. #3 (#34 - #68) who
had Ohio for 12 points. The biggest
movers up were Tim N. (#83 - #59) who had East Carolina for 35 and Brett W.
(#89 - #65) who had East Carolina for 32.
Those who are keeping track at home may notice that there
are now 89 entrants to the pool. 4
people pre-paid, but sent their sheets to my work address, so I added them to
the list. There will be no further
adjustments to the pool from this point on.

I also have been keeping track of net points (points won -
points lost). I think this statistic is
almost a better gauge of the health of your sheet. For example, Dennis R. is in 14th overall in
total points, but he is in 55th place in net points because while he has won 66
points, he has also managed to lose 49 points, for a net of 17 points. On the flip side, someone like Chad L. is in
20th in total points (60), but in 7th in net points because he has only lost 5
points. I think Chad L.'s sheet looks
better than Dennis R.'s at this point.
So here's the net point rankings.
1. Huki Julie: 84

That was fun. But
wait, there's more. There's another game
tomorrow, and this one is a pretty even matchup. That usually means that people didn't wager
much on it, but it also means that if you did and you win, you can really move
up quite a bit. The Hawaii Bowl is the
30th ranked game in terms of points wagered with a total of 1150 points (12.92
average). Vegas has Oregon State listed
as a 3 point favorite, but we, as a group have Oregon State as an even more
slight favorite. The median pick is
Oregon State for 2 points, with the mean at Oregon State for only 1.08
points. You'd think that was the most
evenly split game, but there is one later where the average points taken is
<1 point. 46 people took Oregon State
(11.46 points on average) and 43 people took Boise State (14.49 points on
average). I think it's games like this
that separate winners of the pool from donators - unless you can nail a huge
upset.
Only Sally R. has Oregon State listed as a top 10 pick. 5 people have Boise State (Ally H., Mandi A.,
Shawn S. , Luis B. #1, Luis B. #2).
Those 6 people really have a good reason to watch the game tomorrow. I don't have much of a reason to watch, but
I bet I will watch a bunch of it anyway.
Why? Because I'm a glutton for
these games.
Good Luck!!!!!
