Friday update - Final 50 edition

In a lot of ways, today was more important than yesterday in regards to who is left alive and who is not.  Almost everyone got some points today, so that means that there were a lot of games that separated the field a little.  You will be able to see the field spread out a little more than before.  That's a good thing.  At the end of the day yesterday, I think we had 112 people alive for at least one payout.  Today that number is down to 50.

Yesterday, I think the average entry won about 1.5 points out of 16.  Today that number was 9.5.  There were 16 people that got all 4 games right today.  Amazingly enough, 4 of those people were already eliminated from any payout, so today will just help with their final rankings.  Also, 5 of the people that won all 4 games today wound up mathematically eliminated from 1 or more payout spot.  That happens as we get closer to the end.  People wind up with no way to get 4th place for instance, but can still get 1st, 2nd or 3rd.  With the points per game going from 8 to 16 to 32, it's harder to find space between entries as far as points go.

The bracket with the lowest ranking that can still won any money belongs to Becky H., who is in 137th in points.  She has Texas Tech in the Championship, so I'm guessing if that happens, she might have a chance at the money.   She probably needs some help along with that, but it's better than Pete J. #3, who is at the other end of the spectrum.  He's currently in 4th place, but can't win anything.

Imagine my surprise to see none other than Seth Davis sitting in 19th place in points.  His bracket can't win 1st or 2nd, but has a very real chance at 3rd or 4th.  I give that guy a lot of grief, but he nailed all 4 games today.  Since almost all my other brackets are destroyed, it was a pleasant surprise to see I still had a chance with his bracket.  Strange tournament, indeed.

No one can get all 4 Final 4 teams.  The best anyone can do from here on out is be one of the 10 people that can get 3/4, plus both Championship game participants.  You would think that would keep you in the money, but Tim N. has the distinction of being the only person that get all those points and still not make the money.  He didn't do good enough in points up until now, and at least 4 more people have the same picks as he does and are currently ahead of him in points.  That's too bad.

There are another 21 people that can no longer get any points.  They managed to miss all picks for Final 4.  This year, that doesn't seem so strange.  Ally H. currently leads that group in points with 49 (94th place).  64 people don't have either of their finalists alive.  It wasn't obvious to me given the way this tournament has been going, but all of those brackets are eliminated from all payouts.

Honestly, I am pretty sure that the probabilities won't even change based on the outcome of this game.  There was only person in the whole pool that had Kansas State in the Final 4, and no one had Loyola-Chicago.  The person with Kansas State was eliminated for all contention with the Purdue loss, so everyone's odds will be exactly the same after this game.

That's a lot of losses if the Seminoles make the Final 4.  If that happens, it guarantees that no one is getting any points in the national semi-final game.  That's probably why this game is so important.  There are a lot of people that need Michigan to get 8 or even 8+16 points, and a lot of people ahead of them in the standings that can't catch up if that happens.  I'm guessing for most of the people left, this is more or less a must win game.
