We are done with the next 4 games, and I’ve got to be honest, one of them was a great game. Once that game was done, I took a short nap and didn’t miss anything. We are 8 games in today and we have yet to even a minor upset. My rule of thumb is that I want at least one upset in every set of 4. For the tournament overall, we are hitting that average, but that’s only because we had 6 yesterday. I think the upset Gods owe us some upsets in the next sets of games.
As you might expect, a lot of people went 4/4 in the last
set of games. Here was the breakdown:

So, it was a good time to gain points for everyone. Yawn…
I was really hoping UCSB could pull off the upset. That would have been fun at least.

But we are about to kick off the last quarter of the first
round games. Here are the breakdowns:
Picks for Iowa: 175
Picks for Grand Canyon: 6
Vegas Line: Iowa -14.5
I think Iowa has been in the Top 10 all season. They have Player of the Year candidate Luka
Garza. They score a lot of points, and people
seem to think they are good enough to win a few games. So far, this tournament hasn’t been too kind to
the highly esteemed teams from the Big 10, so we’ll see if they are an
Illinois-type or an Ohio State-type. I
know Grand Canyon is a pretty decent team.
I think they were on schedule to make the tournament last year before
COVID hit. I’m hoping for at least some
closer games this afternoon. This game
is the second biggest point spread left, so hopefully that means closer
games. I would take that. Then again, I could probably use another nap.

These 7/10 games this year have looked kind of lousy on paper
to me. The 2 yesterday I spend maybe 5
minutes total watching. I really didn’t have
any great expectations for any of the 7/10 games yesterday. People seem to like today’s 7/10 teams a
little better. We will get Oregon v VCU
later. People seem to like Connecticut
to make the Sweet 16 a little more than either of the #7 seeds from yesterday. The numbers bear that out. 38 people have Oregon making the Sweet 16. 29 have Connecticut (Yesterday’s #7’s were
much lower – Clemson: 22, Florida: 11).
Picks for Virginia: 137
Picks for Ohio: 44
Vegas Line: Virginia -7.5
Virginia is the defending champion, for those that don’t remember. I know it was a long time ago. Virginia also had to pull out of the ACC
tournament because of COVID, so who knows how that will affect them. Kansas had to do that as well, and it
probably made them look a little worse for about 3/4 of their game. I won money with Virginia two years ago, so I’m
partial to them, but I also graduated from a MAC school, so I always feel
compelled to pick the MAC representative.
For now, I’m going to pull for a good game and see how I feel as it
goes. I’ll probably feel OK about either
team winning.

This seems like the typical 8/9 crapshoot. I don’t love either team, and I don’t think either of them has that great of a chance against Gonzaga in the next round. I don’t have any great commentary about this game.
So, as I was writing this up, I heard news that VCU had to pull out of the NCAA tournament because of COVID. That really sucks. I was hoping that no one would have to do that. They aren’t releasing any details about what happened, but they must not have had enough player or staff to play. It also sucks for this pool. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do but award points for Oregon. That really sucks for the 2 people that VCU going all the way out to the Elite 8, but it wouldn’t be very fair to everyone else to allow them to pick new teams after the games have already been played. I hope everyone at VCU is OK. Unfortunately, there is still a pandemic going on and everyone still needs to be careful out there.
