Hmmm… 4 games, 4 non-upsets. Duke had a real shot at losing. I don’t follow Siena basketball all that close, but the fact that they played all 5 guys all 40 minutes against Duke seemed like maybe a bad idea. Maybe bench a few guys when you are up 10 in the second half. Duke just seemed to wear them down. It was still tied with about 5 minutes to go, so there was a real chance if any of the Siena players had any legs left.
Vanderbilt was down pretty big early, but were up a little
bit at half time, and then started the second half on a 7-0 run and never
really looked back.
As for Arkansas and Michigan State, what were the decisive
plays? Probably the tip off. It was never close in either of those games.
I’ve figured the probabilities for winning each of the
regions except one, so I’ll have those stats later.
As for the pool overall, we are down to only 5 perfect
brackets. There’s no prize for lasting the
longest other than bragging rights. As a
matter of fact, leading in the first round kind of doesn’t matter a whole
lot. Every round is worth 32 points, so
if you get every game right in this round right, it’s worth the same amount as
picking the winner of the Championship game.
These results are essentially tie-breakers between people that have the
same finalists.

Game 9:
North Carolina vs VCU

For fun, I took all the brackets I had as of Tuesday night (about 70 or so) and fed them into ChatGPT along with the scores of all the games for the season and I asked it to find me the best critical path to win a pool with the entries I fed it. It said to mostly take chalk, but pick a few targeted high leverage upsets. This was one of them. As a matter of fact, it recommended to take VCU to win against Illinois in the next round as well. The logic makes sense. They are almost as good as North Carolina, but they are not getting picked that way. Same with Illinois. It makes a lot of sense that VCU is a very high value pick here. That being said, they still have to play and win the games. What makes that task a little easier is that North Carolina’s best player is out with an injury, and are kind of limping to the end of the season. Fingers crossed….
Game 10:
Michigan vs Howard
Vegas Line: Michigan -31

Highest line of the day. I expect a blowout. Howard is playing with house money since they won the play in game. Enjoy it while you can Howard. I expect this game will be borderline unwatchable.
Game 11:
BYU vs Texas

I say this every year, but I think it’s true. If this was not a play-in winner, but just
Texas, I bet this pick distribution would have been a whole lot closer. I had BYU as a 10 seed in my rankings. I wouldn’t have had Texas in at all, so this
are two teams that I think are overseeded.
BYU and North Carolina had very similar trajectories this
season. They both were hanging around in
the top 10 early on, but they both lost important players to injury and limped
home. I think that makes them very
popular upset picks.
BYU does, however (and this is a sentence I didn’t think I’d ever say for a few reasons) have the highest player in college basketball – in case you were wondering why a NBA lottery pick found himself at BYU. It’s not a typical place for NBA prospects to go who aren’t Mormon. BYU is typically pretty strict on their code of conduct for students. Why did he go there? I can’t say for sure, but as the great Tony Kornheiser says, “The answer to all your questions is ‘Money’”.

St. Mary’s vs Texas A&M

I have a theory that there could be a lot more perennial
good mid major programs if they were allowed to schedule like Gonzaga. It’s like the major conference teams decided
Gonzaga was allowed to play a premier schedule, so they let them, and they wind
up as a Top 4 seed every year. I bet St.
Mary’s could be every bit as good a program if there wallowed to play a similar
schedule as Gonzaga. But, since they
aren’t allowed to, they wind up in the 5-7 seed territory every season.
Texas A&M is a mediocre big conference school. Yawn….
