4 more games to go in the First round

 Well, none of the those last 4 games was much of a nail biter.  I guess Iowa won on a relatively close match-up, but they play so slow and Clemson doesn’t have a great track record of winning in the tournament, so I never really thought they were going to pull it out.  UCF got to within 5 in the second half, but then UCLA pulled it back out to double digits, so it wasn’t super interesting.

I was wrong earlier.  All 4 #9 seeds have won, so the Midwest did have one upset – St. Louis over Georgia.  How could I forget?

Well, I thought Prairie View was the worst team in the tournament at the start, and I was pretty surprised they beat Lehigh in the play-in.  At least they get about as full of rest as possible before getting clobbered by Florida.  I think this was the biggest line of the entire first round.

Game 30

Kansas vs Cal Baptist

I think they are playing this game in San Diego, which not that far from Riverside.  Maybe that will help Cal Baptist.  I think Kansas was awarded a pretty generous seed, although I would have only moved them down to a 5.  Kansas has the current consensus #1 NBA draft pick, but he’s been sitting out a lot and playing part time a lot of the other time.  If he’s not all that focused, Cal Baptist could pull an upset.  If it looks close, I bet Viejas will be really loud.  That would be fun.

Game 31

Connecticut vs Furman

I think this is the most lopsided first round game.  I’m not saying it shouldn’t be, but it probably shouldn’t be.  20.5 is a lot of points, but Furman is not a play-in team against a #1 seed.  People have definitely gotten used to Connecticut being good in the tournament, and they are justified in that opinion with back to back championships in recent memory.  I had them as a 4-seed, so I think they are overseeded as a #2, but they should still win against the Paladins.

Game 32

Miami (Florida) vs Missouri

This was one of those games that ChatGPT highlighted as a high leverage game, and it recommended taking Missouri.  That may be true, but to me this just looks like a bunch of mid-tier Power 5 teams.  I wouldn’t have even of had Missouri in the tournament at all, so a #10 seems generous.  Still, this looks like it will be best of the last 4 games to watch from a closeness standpoint.
