There were 3 games that looked like they potentially could be upsets in the last 4 games, and all of them wound up with the lower seed winning. That’s what I like to see. My next hope is that a team that is seeded 1-4 loses. That would be fantastic. The reason I say that is because in a lot of these cases, unless you took some strange stuff downbracket, you had the team that lost losing in the next round anyway. When you start losing teams that were going to win more than one more game is where the stakes get a little higher. We have some chances at that coming up in the late games.
A few notes: I was
pretty excited about Howard coming close to Michigan, but I nover really
thought they were going to pull the upset.
Fun for a little while….
I bow down to my AI overlords. ChatGPT said that taking VCU was a really
good leverage play against the field, and look at that. They won in overtime and took out all the
undefeated brackets in the process. If
they beat Illinois in the next round, I’ll be super suspicious about it’s
prognostication abilities. Yikes.
Still, I watched the overtime of that VCU game. I don’t think North Carolina made a shot from
the field the entire 5 minutes. Hard to
win that way, although they almost did.
St. Mary’s looked bad in it’s game. That puts a little dent in my theory that could
be the next Gonzaga if they scheduled better.

AJ Dybantsa is the best player I’ve seen so far for
BYU. Money well spent, Cougars. I’m sure he’s gone to the pros next year, but
he almost singlehandedly took BYU to the 2nd round.

Game 13
Illinois vs Penn

I personally would have liked to see Yale in this game, as I
think they were the best team in the Ivy League, but because of the incomprehensible
idea of sending a tournament winner to the dance, we get Penn. It’s a return to the dance for Fran
McCaffrey, who was the coach at Iowa for a long time. He had a reputation for being an a-hole, so I’m
not in love with seeing him back.
All year, there was 3 really good teams that separated themselves from the field, and there was a rotation of teams that were the 4th best team. Illinois was that for parts of the year. So was Gonzaga, St. John’s, Florida, Connecticut, the list goes on.
Game 14
Georgia vs St. Louis

I love this game.
One, I love St. Louis. They are a
mid-major that I had ranked all season.
I thought they should be a 6 seed.
I thought Georgia should be a 9 seed.
Early in the season, I think that Georgia was surprisingly good. Nobody ever expects much from Georgia
basketball, at least in the 50+ years since Domonique Wilkins graduated. Still, I went to Georgia Tech for 2 years so “To
Hell With Georgia”.
If you haven’t Robby Avila, he’s a real treat to watch. He should have been in the tournament last year at Indiana State, but (stop me if you’ve heard this one before) they dominated the Missouri Valley conference, had a great record, lost in the conference tournament and were not invited. Then the coach got a new job and he followed him to St. Louis. Maybe the best thing about him is his nickname. “Cream Abdul-Jabbar” is an all-timer. I love that nickname.
Game 15
Gonzaga vs Kennesaw State

I am a little surprised to see this only at 21.5. Is Kennesaw State any good? My gut tells me the answer is “no”. I full expect Gonzaga to roll in this
game. Then again, Gonzaga lost this
season at Portland, and I’m betting most of you didn’t know there was a college
that played basketball in Portland (There isa Portland State also), so they are
capable of throwing a stinker out there.
I’d be good with it.
Game 16
Houston vs Idaho

Speaking of Portland State, they should be representing the
Big Sky as regular season winners, but we get Idaho, so good luck!!!
Houston was a preseason top 2 or 3 team and started out kind
of slow. They were one of those
rotational teams at #4 in the country. I
had Houston as a #3 seed, but if they
make the Sweet 16, they would play the next games in Houston, so that should be
motivation to win this game. That, and
they lost in the Championship game last year, so it should be a focus to get
back there.
