You are telling me that biggest upsets of the day were 2 #9 seeds beating 2 #8 seeds? So, if you were favored in the Vegas line today, you won. 16/16 favorites by the Vegas point spread won. This has to go down as one of the worst days of basketball in NCAA history. There were a small handful of games that were exciting, but if those teams NEVER win, it doesn’t really capture the imagination that way a team actually winning does. I think days like today make the tournament so much worse. It’s hard to sell “madness” when there is practically none.
All top 4 seeds in each region advanced. Wisconsin was the biggest upset of the
tournament, and that happened early yesterday morning. The biggest draw of the tournament is seeing
smaller schools rise up and beat the bigger teams. The NCAA is structuring their sport in such a
way that that becomes virtually impossible.
Like, maybe there were some Christians that beat some lions occasionally
too. Now they are going to have to sell
that games are going to be higher quality basketball games later on, but people
don’t tune into the dance for that. If
you want high quality basketball games, watch the NBA or some regular season
games. You can see big name teams play
each other any weekend from November to early March. That’s boring. I can’t even pretend like this is exciting. It’s not.
It’s like watching professional yachting. I have several more rants I feel like going
on about this, but maybe kids are reading this.
But, we have a pool to run, and someone is going to
win. The odds of an upset are probably a
little better from here on, but it will be something like Louisville beating
Michigan State or Kentucky beating Iowa State.
No one is going to confuse Kentucky or Louisville as plucky upstart
schools that the country can go on a ride with.
I’ll take them if they happen, but I’m clinging to High Point, St. Louis
and VCU like a downed sailor on a life raft in a storm.
Last year was arguably the most boring tournament in recent
memory. I looked at the 1st
round scores in our pool. Back then, there
were more entries and there was a 5 way tie for 1st after the 21st
round with 29/32. Guess what it is this
year: It’s 5 people tied with
29/32. The average score is actually
about 1 point better this year. Ugh… These stats just keep pointing in one
direction and it makes me sad.

At least that bracket is sitting at 129th in points and 83rd
in net points, so you probably still had to hit some upsets to win this thing –
at least I hope so.
Another 62 people have only lost 1 Sweet 16 team, so about
60% of the pool either has lost 0 or 1 Sweet 16 team. That just means that it is super easy to
predict. Then again, they still have to
play those games. Sadly, they had to
play all those first round games too and almost no upsets happened. It may sound like it, but I still really hope
for upsets. I want to see some 1s and 2s
go down in the next round. That will
restore some of my faith in this adventure.
64 people are eliminated from winning any of the 4 regional
prizes. That means most people are still

The games are all worth 2 points tomorrow and Sunday. They go off at a little different schedule. It is a 1-1-2-2-2 schedule. Everyone gets the first 2 games in their entirety,
then they stagger the last 6 games every hour or so. I’ll update things in the gaps, so after
games 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8.

Man, the NCAA is trying to kill me. They must know that the one plucky upstart
small college team that America would get behind is St. Louis, so they are
putting the game on 1st.
Everyone should be on board the Billiken bandwagon by now. Who doesn’t like “Milk Chamberlain” or “Larry
Nerd”? He’s a great watch. Every so often there are guys like this, and
I love them every time. There was a guy
named Krutwig that played for Loyola (Chicago) a few years ago that was
similar. If I have to rank my favorite types
of players, they go like this:
1. Giant dudes (like Tacko Fall or Sim Bhullar - or even Zach Edey).
2.
5’10” or shorter scorers with great handles (Like Dominique
Daniels Jr. from Cal Baptist).
3.
Unathletic looking big guys who can make great
passes.
I have Michigan going really far in this pool, but I will
gladly sacrifice all my brackets to see more of St. Louis. I want to see a solid week’s worth of
coverage for this team. I’m not about to
start rooting for Goliath.
