I’d say about half of the last 4 games were boring. I didn’t watch hardly any of the Houston / Idaho game. As soon as I finished updating stuff and went back over the TV bank, the game was already out of reach. I think Penn hung with Illinois for about 7-10 minutes and then it was a rout. Those were kind of expected.
The third game turned out to be pretty interesting. I had Kennesaw State as the 3rd
best team in Conference USA (Liberty was the best – my favorite punching bag
school), and I was a little surprised they were only getting 21.5 against
Gonzaga. I figured Gonzaga was going to
roll over this team I had never heard much about. Turns out they were legit. They looked pretty good all game. I was hoping for an upset, but it wasn’t
meant to be. Fun fact, the biggest upset
of the year was only 23 points, and that was Eastern Michigan over Cincinnati,
neither of which are in the tournament.
21.5 would have definitely qualified as a huge upset.
The other game brought the widest smile to my face. St. Louis looked like the best team in the
tournament today. I knew there was a
reason I had them ranked all season.
They more or less ran a lay-up drill against Georgia. They were up about 17 at half time and then
came out in the second half on something like a 21-0 run to totally crush the
spirits of the Bulldogs. Always a fun
day when a good mid-major beats a middling Power 5 team. I would point to games like this when people
bring up teams like St. Mary’s today to say smaller conference teams don’t
deserve bids. They will say, “See, they
got killed. They don’t belong”. Well, Georgia got killed and I guarantee no
one is going to say we should give fewer bids to power 5 conferences as a
result. It’s a totally tilted playing
field.
After all the games of today, only 8.33% of all points have
been doled out. If you did great or didn’t
think you did great, here’s one thing I would look at. If you still have all of your Sweet 16 teams
alive, you are not in terrible shape.
That is 93 people, which is quite a bit with all the upsets. Another 69 people are missing only one Sweet
16 and nothing else. That’s half the
field, so don’t lose faith. As long as
you have a path to winning, you have hope.
I was able to calculate the chances of winning an individual
region as well. Remember that I pay out
$25 to the person that scores the most points in the 4 brackets. I forgot that I allow ties for that, so I
have to just have the eliminations. If
you don’t see a team name next to your name, you are still alive to win that
region.

So, even if you are doing badly overall, you may still win
something by doing well in an individual region.
Something I am very happy about is how the Gutless bracket is doing. That is the bracket that is only by the seeds. That bracket can’t win any regions and is currently sitting in a tie for 170th (T111th in net). That is pretty low, although they haven’t lost any Sweet 16 teams yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Game 17
Kentucky vs. Santa Clara

Remember what I said about ChatGPT and the critic path to
winning. This is another game it said to
pick. It actually recommended picking
Santa Clara to win this game and the next against Iowa State. Apparently, it feels like Santa Clara is
pretty strong or Kentucky is pretty weak or both. Given the VCU game, I am not going against ChatGPTstradamus.
Plus, who doesn’t want to see a mid-major beat
Kentucky? Just Ashley Judd and probably
Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul. Everyone
else in the country should be rooting for the Broncos.
Game 18
Texas Tech vs Akron

This feels like a rerun of the North Carolina / VCU
game. North Carolina was missing their best
player and kind of limped into the postseason, and they still favored against a
very good mid major. I’d like to see a
similar outcome.
As a graduate of a MAC school, I feel compelled to root for
Akron. I thought they should have made
the dance as a wild card even if they didn’t win the MAC tournament. Records aside, Akron actually had a better
resume than Miami (Ohio). I had Akron as
a 9 seed, and Texas Tech as a 6, so this looks like a classic 12/5
matchup. Plus, Akron has a cool Kangaroo
mascot. Who doesn’t like kangaroos? It’s got to better than some Western yahoo
with a bunch of guns.
Game 19
Arizona vs LIU

not sure. Anyway, they are going to get

Virginia vs Wright State

I feel like Virginia is a team I know almost nothing about,
although I had them ranked #10 at the end of the season, so #3 seems right. They were pretty easily the 2nd
best team in the ACC, but I feel like they were never mentioned in anything I
watched or listened to about college basketball. The coach that led them to a National
Championship a few years ago retired, and I can’t name a single player on their
team, but they have a pretty gaudy record and have beaten some good teams. I guess I’ll find out if they are actually
any good tomorrow.
I guess, to be fair, I know even less about Wright
State. Like, I think it’s in Ohio, but
it might be in Kentucky. I really am not
sure. I’ll have to find out more if they
spring the upset.
