I feel like I’ve seen the exact same Michigan State vs Connecticut game over and over in the NCAA Tournament. The script goes like this – Usually the favorite jumps out to a huge lead. The underdog fights back and closes to one possession or even takes the lead with a few minutes to go. Then, the favorite pulls away at the end. In situations like that, it usually takes so much energy to overcome the huge deficit, that they don’t have enough to finish it off at the end. That feels like what happened to Michigan State in this game. Honestly, I would love to see a best of 7 series between those two teams.
As for Iowa State, I think I’ve made it clear that almost
every year I fall in love with them, and then that disappoint in the tournament. This year, it’s easy to give them a
pass. When everyone filled out brackets,
they looked pretty formidable. Then, in
the first game, they lost a 2nd team All-American and their best
player. They managed to beat down
Kentucky in the 2nd round without him, but it was probably asking
too much to have them advance a whole lot further. That, I think Tennessee put on the best display
of free throw shooting defense I have ever seen, as the Cyclones missed free throw
after free throw. At one point the
announcer said “This is painful to watch” after they missed yet another free
throw.
Iowa State’s loss is Tennessee’s gain, and it accomplishes
something I really like, and it is this: it rewards people for taking a chance
on putting Tennessee in the Elite 8. Those
4 points are really valuable, plus the 4 point people won’t get for Iowa
State. It also prevents 3 of the 4
regions from being a 1 vs a 2 to go to the Final 4. More on that later.

I want to point out again, Dianna Alv. I have a lot of respect for this
bracket. It is objectively a terrible
bracket. There is red all over it. She is 11 points out of 242nd –
but she can still get 3rd or 4th. If you are not going to pick a favorite to
win, this seems like a best-case scenario to me. I hope she really loves Tennessee. They are single-handedly keeping her alive.

I’m kind of intrigued by 3 particular brackets, and they are
the 3 people left that can win that no longer have their champion alive. All 3 (Carlotte Niem, Ally Her. #2, DAZE 3)
have Florida winning. One thing they all
have in common is that they have Purdue in the final game. 2 of the 3 can only win if the final is Iowa
over Purdue (Ally Her. #2 & DAZE 3), but Charlotte Niem. has 4 ways to win. 3 of them involve Iowa winning (2 over Purdue,
1 over Tennessee), but she also can win if Tennessee beats Iowa in the
finals. Keep an eye out for that. She won it pretty handily a few years ago. I feel like she might have “The vision”.
The first game tomorrow decides a couple of things. First, it decides who makes the final 4 from
the South region. Second, it could
decide if I have any shot at winning my “Sum of the final 4 seeds Under 8.5”
bet. Third, it will determine who wins
the $25 for getting the most points from this region.
If Iowa wins, Addie H. takes all $25.
If Illinois wins, Elizabeth N & Mark Sp. split the
