It took the better part of 4 days but we finally had something I would consider a very meaningful upset. Up until the Iowa / Florida game, every upset was of a team, that if you went be the seeds, was supposed to lose in the next round anyway. Those are nice, but even Wisconsin was a #5 seed, so if you only chose by the seeds, you lost 1 point for picking that game. Florida losing was huge. Based on the seeds, they were supposed to win at two more games in addition to the one they lost. That winds up being at least 2+4+8 = 14 points if you went only by the seeds. That’s what I like to see.
I’m pretty sure I knew what Florida was trying to do on that
last play. I’m sure they thought Iowa
was just going to collapse on the ball and second Florida guy would be wide
open for a layup, but they either didn’t execute it right or Iowa clogged things
up randomly that caused them to not get a shot off. I don’t actually hate that play, but the
margin for error is very, very low.
Tennessee also pulled off the upset, so it wasn’t just Iowa. That also made me smile, although Virginia
was one of those teams I mentioned earlier that was supposed to lose their next
game anyway. Still, a lot of people had
them as a dark horse and they have to hope that chaos breaks out. That’s actually part of the fun of this pool. If you had Virginia to the Final 4, your best
bet right now is having Tennessee make the Final 4 despite them just having
beat your team. You need everyone else
to get as few points as possible in that region.
So, it will come as no surprise to everyone that no one had
a perfect day (Woo Hoo!). For a while,
we had one bracket that was 7/7, but had Texas Tech in the last game. We did have 23 people that went 7/8 including
two people whose only loss was Florida, but they had Florida winning the whole
thing. Ouch.

There are only 2 people that can get all the remaining
points. Those people are: Don’t Coog It
and Addie H. There are 51 brackets with
1 missing Elite 8 team. It’s kind of
interesting to see the distribution of who people are missing. 39 of them are missing Florida. There are 4 Vanderbilts, 2 Virginias, 2
Gonzagas and one each of Ohio State, Louisville, UCLA and Texas Tech. I would have though those would be more
consolidated, but this is good. I want
people to pick whacky stuff. That is how
you win these pools. You just need your
wacky stuff to work.
So, as most of you know, this is where I switch from
collecting points to figuring out eliminations.
At least initially, I will assume that all games are coin flips and
figure out the probabilities of your bracket winning any of the 4 payouts. I will also try to put out previews into when
everyone’s bracket is in danger of getting knocked out with a loss. From here on out, it’s not really so much
about gathering points as it is making sure your bracket is still
mathematically alive.
For those that missed that little point in there, last year
I paid out 5 places because we had 250+ entries. Since we had < 250 this year, I’m only
paying out 4 spots. I’ll try to get at
least 1st place done tonight, and I’ll update the blog as 2nd.
3rd and 4th are completed.
