I literally was reading my book for most of the Connecticut / Duke game. I saw that Duke was up really big in the first half, and I kind of figured that this was going to be like so many other games I have seen in this tournament. It was either going to be a Duke blowout (like the Michigan game), or at best a game where Connecticut fights back to make it close and then runs out of gas.
As it turned out, this is exactly why I keep watching games
and this game had exactly what I’ve been calling for all tournament long. Finally, an underdog manages to pull one out. It’s hard to think of Connecticut as an
underdog, but I’ll take what I can get.
It accomplishes a lot for me. One, it makes it so that the final four does
not have 3 1 seeds and a 3. That may not
seem like much, but 3 1 seeds after last year, when there were 4 would have
turned even more people away from the tournament. It also allows people to feel like these
games are not just wired for the favorites to win all the time. That counts as well.
But wait, there’s more.
Because of the Connecticut win, this day goes down as 2 of my favorite
days of the tournament – the day Duke goes out, and the day the Gutless bracket
can no longer win any money. No one
should be rewarded for picking only by the seeds. That sucks.
I’m sure there will be a lot of analysis about this, but
what was Duke doing on that last play? They
were up 2 with the ball. Connecticut had
to foul. They were 100% going to get
fouled. One of my biggest pet peeves are
teams that can’t shoot free throws. Duke
win that game if they inbound the ball, stand still and make 2 free throws. Crazy….
Fun, but crazy.
Speaking of fun, Duke was the #1 overall seed in the tournament,
so this is a hand grenade in the standings.
You would think a 1-1-2-3 Final 4 would be relatively easy to guess, but
you would be wrong. Only 2 people got
all 4 teams in the Final 4 (Jim Del. & Dani A. #1). In a touch of irony, neither of them has the
same finalists on either side of the bracket – so the Final 4 is as far as they
agree.
In other good news, there will be no need for tie-breakers for
the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place payouts. There are still 2 ways that there can be a
tie for 4th place. If the
finals is Arizona v Illinois, there can be a 5-way tiebreaker between:

I have the Jay Bilas bracket, so my tie-breaker is going to
be 167. I’ll reach out to the other 4
people for their numbers in case we need them.
The other way we may need a tie-breaker is if the final is
Michigan v Connecticut, but in that case the tier breaker would be between Peter
J. #1 and Peter J. #3, so I’m not so sure it’s all that important.
As for the regional winners, we had a clean winner in the
Midwest, as Steve Mucc. #4 went 31/32 to win the region outright. His only loss in the region was taking Akron
over Texas Tech in the first round. So,
$25 is going to Steve. That’s nice
because this bracket can no longer get any points (it had Purdue over St. John’s
in the Final), and is currently sitting in 153rd place. That’s the fun of these regional
contests. That bracket still gets money.
As for the East, Duke’s loss managed to avoid a potential
10-way tie for 1st place. As
it was, we had a 4-way tie, but that’s still better, as winning at least covers
more than your entry fee. All 4 people
went 31/32 in the East, with 2 of them missing UCF over UCLA and the other 2
missing Ohio State over TCU. Each of
these people will be getting $25/4 = $6.25.
Looking back at it, no one managed a perfect region. 244*4 = 976 chances, and yet no one went
32/32 in points. That tells you just how
impossible a perfect bracket is.
There are only 18 people that can get all remaining
points. Of those, 3 of them can’t win
anything (Chrissy S., COOL GUY, Leighton Niem.). Still, good showing by them.
Only 23 people are alive to win any money at all. Most of those people need to hit all 3 games in
order to win anything. There are a few
exceptions:
1.
Jim Del. only needs Michigan to win it all to
get 1st place.
2.
Dani A. #1 only needs Arizona to win it all to
get 1st place.
3.
Luis B. #3 only needs Arizona to win it all to
get 3rd place.
4.
Michelle L. #3 only needs Michigan to win it all
to get 3rd place.
5.
Peter J. #1 only needs Michigan to win it all to
get 4th place (see tie-breaker earlier).
Everyone else needs to go 3/3. Those people above can relax during the first
game of the Final 4. The rest of everyone
needs to sweat it out.
