End of Day 3

I will say that the late games turned out to be much more watchable than the early games.  We also broke our string of consecutive favorites winning.  If you go by the seeds, we only had one upset all day, and that was Texas over Gonzaga.  If you went by who was favored in Vegas, Nebraska over Vanderbilt was also an upset.  That game was a bit of a tie-breaker game.  Most people had both of those teams playing, but there was not strong consensus on who should win.  That makes it more fun.

I’m a little disappointed that every single non-Power 5 team is now out of the tournament.  Texas is a play-in winner and double digit seed, but nobody in the world is confusing Texas for a school with limited resources.  I mean, they almost paid their head coach $25M to go away in 2023, but managed to pay him nothing after he was charged with felony domestic battery.  But I feel pretty confident that money was not the main issue there.

Still, I’ll take what I can get.  I was pretty excited about High Point.  They looked great, and if they would have beaten Arkansas, they would have the toast of the Nation for the next week.  As it stands, not many people around the country are going to be super thrilled with a  feel good story about Arkansas in the Sweet 16.

I am workshopping a theory.  It goes like this:  A few years ago, when there was a lot more conference realignment, the Big 12 lost some schools and went fishing around for other conferences to raid.  They came upon the AAC, or American Athletic Conference.  At the time, it was kind of considered a mid-major conference.  It had some decent names and would sometimes got 3 teams in the tournament, but never more than that.  They took Houston and Cincinnati, which were well-known basketball schools at the time, but they also took UCF.  UCF was really nothing special as a basketball school.  Prior to joining the Big 12, they made the tournament as an at-large exactly one time, and they had to put up a really good season to do it.  Now they are in a Power 5 conference, and they can put up a mediocre season and make it (see: this year).  My theory is this – there a bunch of schools that are considered small, but if they are allowed to play in a bigger conference, they will be allowed to play a better caliber of team and people will see them as a decent team.  The “they have to prove it” excuse will be taken away, and they’ll be given a chance.  I feel like Butler prior to moving to the Big East was like this.  Just my 2 cents.  I’m not sure how to prove this, but the Power 5 oligopoly isn’t really working.

OK.  On to the actual results today.  There was one upset and one 50/50 pick game, but all the rest were chalk.  Despite that, only 3 people managed to get all 8 games right.  Congratulations to Brian Kerb., DAZE 3, and Mike Weich.  Only 28 people managed to 7/8, which seems kind of low considering one of them was the Gutless bracket, so the slate looks very predictable on paper.

As a result, there was a little movement, but not a ton.  I’m still keeping hope alive that there can be some wild upsets tomorrow that will throw the pool into chaos.  That’s always more fun.  I like people that take chances in this thing and get rewarded for it.

Given that most of the top seeds are still alive, it should come as no surprise that a whopping 112 brackets can still get all remaining points.  What that tells me is that there is a lot of commonalities in the picks out there, and some people are already probably knocked out of all spots – especially if you have something like all 4 1 seeds in the finals (as 25 people do).  Looking at those 25, the only permutation no one chose was Florida beating Michigan in the finals.  Odd.  Anyway, 9 people took Duke over Arizona, so if you did that, but you are currently in 8th place among that cohort, you are probably dead.

On to the regions.  A lot got whittled down in the regional prizes, but still about half the field is alive for at least one regional prize.  I was looking at the West Region, and it turns out that if Arizona beat Purdue to make the Final 4, the region will end up in a 9-way tie, so everyone will get $2.77.  Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.  That’s kind of an insultingly low amount of money.  Plus it would also mean chalk, chalk and more chalk.

They are doing the same type of schedule as today tomorrow, but I think I’m only going to post at midday and at the end of the day.  It doesn’t make much sense to give a preview for a game that is already started on the second half.  That, as some games stretch out, they start to come close to ending around the same time.  It’s probably just easier to keep my thoughts down and write twice.

Speaking of which, after tomorrow’s games, I should be able to get at least the calculations done for the chances at 1st place.  If I can do more than that, I will, but will at least try to have the eliminations done for 1st.  2nd-5th usually take longer because I need to account for a bunch of tie-breaker scenarios.  1st is pretty clean as far as the process to create it goes.

Game 41:

Purdue vs Miami (Florida)

Vegas Line: Purdue -7.5

Picks for Purdue: 201

Picks for Miami: 24

Other: 20

I am looking at the point spreads, and there is hope for tomorrow.  Today, 5/8 games had double digit point spreads, which are pretty large for college basketball.  Tomorrow, there are only 2.  All the rest of these games could conceivably be close.

A friend of mine said that he was looking at the Purdue roster before the tournament started and other than Zach Edey, it was more or less the same roster they had when they lost to FDU 3 years ago.  I guess that says something about how they’ve managed to keep the team together.  It also highlights just how young that old Purdue team was.

Miami is a team that came out of nowhere.  I remember last year, their coach left midseason because he didn’t like the direction college basketball was going with transfers and NIL.  At that point, they nosedived and finished with a terrible record.  Their new coach has done an amazing reclamation effort.  Then again, I can’t imagine it’s too hard to recruit players to transfer to Miami, especially if you are going t opay them to be there.

Game 42:

Iowa State vs Kentucky

Vegas Line: Iowa State -4.5

Picks for Iowa State: 216

Picks for Kentucky: 23

Other: 6

Luckily for Iowa State, it looks like their best player has a sprained ankle, even though he was in a boot.  X-rays were negative, and he says he’s going to go, so we’ll see how much he can play.  For the Cyclones sake, I hope it’s a lot.  Iowa State is one of those teams I perpetually root for, and they perpetually underachieve in the dance.  Kentucky is Kentucky, and I doubt I’ll ever actually root for them.  Maybe against Duke, but that seems more like a “Battle of Stalingrad” situation for me.  I’d like to see Iowa State advance, but 4.5 points isn’t a lot of advantage.

Game 43

Kansas vs St. John’s

Vegas Line: St. John’s -4

Picks for Kansas: 86

Picks for St. John’s: 148

Other: 11

Wait, how is it that Kansas is the 4 seed in this situation?  Clearly St. John’s looks like the better team, and they are being picked as such.  This is a giant game for the day.  First it’s a 4/5 game, so there’s a lot of cleaving that will come as a result.  Second, there are more than a few people that have St. John’s beating Duke in the next round (26 people to be exact, compared to only 14 that have Kansas).  They are clearly the darling of a lot of people, myself included.

Every year, I create a ranking throughout the year, and then use it to pick in the pool.  Every year, this seems to happen:  I have a team that I think is underrated, and I get excited about taking them.  Then the committee throws them into some region with one of the few teams I have ranked higher.  That’s St. John’s this year.  If they were in Florida’s region, I’d have them in the Final 4, but they are forcing me to choose between them and Duke.  I swear this happens every single year.

Game 44

Virgina vs Tennessee

Vegas Line: Tennessee -1

Picks for Virginia: 152

Picks for Tennessee: 70

Other: 23

If you like shades of Orange, this is your game.  I must admit, I am a little surprised at the line here.  Tennessee beat Miami (Ohio) and Virginia struggled against Wright State, but I thought Virginia was pretty clearly the better team throughout the season.  What am I missing?  It can’t be the magic of March-time Rick Barnes, since we all know he underachieves in the tournament.  Maybe the betting public finally saw Virginia in action and didn’t really like them.  It’s hard to figure this one out.  Our little cohort seems to not understand it either.  We are treating this as more of a 5-6 point game than a +1 game.  Vegas usually does a good job getting close to the score, so if nothing else, it should be a good game, and hey, I’ll take my upsets wherever I can get them.

Good Luck everyone!!!!!!!
