The reason I love upsets so much is because picking favorites to win is the most boring thing you can do. I really like it when people take chances and pick underdogs, and then the underdogs win. It takes a certain amount of guts to do, and it should be a requisite for anyone winning this thing.
So, congratulations to anyone that picked Tennessee. That probably knocked out a lot of people out
already. I though the line was a little
out of whack, but apparently, the Vegas crystal ball gazers saw something that
I didn’t in that game.
St. John’s was kind of an upset in that they were the lower
seeded team, but they were giving points in Vegas, so I kind of don’t count
that one – although it does hurt the Gutless bracket, so maybe I should. It does set up an interesting matchup against
Duke in the next round.

Florida vs Iowa

This should really be a contrast in styles. Iowa used to have a reputation for running up
and down the court, but the new coach there runs maybe the slowest offense in
D1. They are very efficient, which is
how they win games, but most of the time, you are just watching them pass the
ball around the perimeter and looking at the shot clock run down.
Florida is considerably more fast paced than that. I think they put up 207 points in the first
round game against Prairie View. Coming
into this tournament, I thought they were the weakest of the #1 seeds, but as
of right now, I’d say Duke has been the only one that has looked
vulnerable. Then again, Iowa is winning
at halftime of this game, so could we have our first huge upset of the
tournament!!! I’d love to see it.
Game 46
Arizona vs Utah State

I think this was the biggest line of the day. I thought Utah State looked fantastic in their
1st round game against Villanova, so Arizona must be on some other
level. Charles Barkley keeps calling
this the Arizona Invitational, so they are certainly a trendy pick to make the
Final 4 at least. Normally, I’d say Utah
State has an advantage playing in San Diego, since they have to play there every
year, but Arizona isn’t too far away, so I’m sure there will be plenty of Wildcat
fans there. I just hope they all leave
before I have to drive into work tomorrow.
Game 47
Connecticut vs UCLA

I have to admit, I don’t really see the big deal for this
year’s version of Connecticut. All year
long, I follow Joe Lunardi and he updates his brackets pretty much every week. He had Connecticut as a #1 seed most of the
season. It was only recently that he
dropped them to even #2. They were very
good for a good chunk of the year, but I had them much lower. That, and they recently lost to Marquette,
who up until then, was the worst team in any Power 5 conference. That’s not great going into March.
UCLA seems to be a really trendy pick to win this game. I’ve been kind of surprised at how many of
these brackets look very, very similar.
For the most part, except for 4/5 games in this round, all the picks
have been overwhelmingly in the same direction.
I’m not sure if that’s a byproduct of last year being so chalky, people adjusting
to a more chalky bracket in general, or AI advising that type of pick, but it’s
going to make a lot of the later games very, very important.
Game 48
Alabama vs Texas Tech

I think this was the part of the bracket everyone expected there
to be some upsets. Akron was a pretty
popular pick here. Texas Tech is missing
their best player, and Alabama is missing their 2nd best player due
to him being thrown out of school.
For the most part, our picks have aligned with the Vegas
line, but this is the rare instance where they don’t. I’m a little surprised at the line, which
probably means that Texas Tech is going to win comfortably. Something I’ve learned in all my years of
betting on sports is this: if the line seems quite a bit out of whack, you
almost always are better served going against your internal judgement, since
you are probably missing something. That’
what has been happening in the Tennessee / Virginia game, and I assume it is
what will happen here.
