Friday of the 1st round is a great day. All the brackets are entered. I can sleep in a little bit. All I have to do is watch basketball all day. I’ve got a fresh bag of pretzels. I still have leftover pizza and KFC. Good times. Now, we just need some upsets.
That didn’t happen in the first 4 games, despite the best
efforts of a few teams. I was pretty
sure Santa Clara had won the game when they nailed a 3-point shot with 3
seconds left to go up 3 against Kentucky.
It took a miracle last second heave for Kentucky to stay alive. In OT, Santa Clara seemed to fall in love
with the 3 point shot, and got 2 of them blocked in a row. It’s pretty hard to block a 3-point shot unless
you know it’s about to go up. That was
some pretty terrible offense from the Broncos.
Kentucky certainly didn’t look impressive.
Speaking of not looking impressive, I was feeling pretty
good about a Wright State upset of Virginia for about 37 minutes of that
game. I hadn’t watched Virginia all
season, and based on what I saw, it’s hard to see how they got to be a 3
seed. Maybe Wright State was just better
than people thought. Just more evidence for
my theory that smaller conference teams can play with Power 5 teams if given a
chance.
Upset darlings Akron didn’t really look that bad, but if you
shoot 65% as a team for a game, you are never going to lose. I don’t care who you are playing at what
level. That was nuts. Tough break for the Zips.

Game 21
Iowa State vs Tennessee State

It’s halftime of this game and Iowa State is up 26 points
already. I feel pretty good that they
are going to pull this one out. The downside
for Iowa State is that arguably their best player left the game with an injury
and is not expected to return. They won’t
need him for this game, but they certainly will if they want to advance
further.
Game 22
Alabama vs Hofstra

It’s the T-shirt game of the day. Hawaii let me down yesterday as the t-shirt
of choice. Hofstra is doing quite a bit
better. They are down 2 at halftime of
this game, but they’ve been leading pretty much throughout. I’d love to see an upset, as we still haven’t
had any of the top 4 seeds in any region lose.
Alabama is a little handicapped. Their second best player was caught with 2+
pounds of marijuana at his off-campus apartment. He was let go from the university. I am of two minds about this. My first is that marijuana should just be
legal everywhere. If it was, this wouldn’t
make any difference at all. My other
mind is that I’m guessing marijuana is illegal in Alabama, so this kid seems
like maybe he was a drug dealer. I’m
sure there are countless people in Alabama who get busted for drugs in Alabama
all the time that aren’t spoken of in such gracious terms. “He’s just a kid that made some mistakes and we
still love him” I’m sure is not the prevailing sentiment for any non-basketball
playing player in Alabama (or a lot of the country, for that matter). What is the difference? The answer to all your questions, as always,
is money.
Game 23
Villanova vs Utah State

This is a strange one for me. First off, this is the only game where the
lower seed is favored. Villanova is
still the better seed, so you’d think people would still give it some deference. Look at the distribution though. People are treating this game like an 6/11
game, with Utah State as the 6.
I thought that Utah State should have been a 5 seed, and
Villanova should have been a 6, so if nothing else, we should see some pretty
good basketball.
I think ChatGPT said to take Utah State, so maybe AI was
recommending this game a lot. Maybe a
lot of people in this pool live where the Mountain West plays, so they are
familiar with Utah State? Maybe people
remember that Villanova hasn’t been the same since Jay Wright left and don’t
believe in them. I’m grasping at reasons
here.
Game 24
Tennessee vs Miami (Ohio)

I love this game. It
has so much to point to a Miami (Ohio) upset.
First off, Rick Barnes has a fantastic track record for doing really bad
in the NCAA tournament. He definitely
falls in the category of teams / coaches that seem to let you down.
On the flip side, who is rooting against Miami (Ohio)? Ghouls.
That’s who. They are a great
story. I’d love to see them continue the
good times. It makes everyone’s lives so
much more fun – all except for Rick Barnes, I guess. But if Rick Barnes is disappointed, that’s
the price I’m willing to pay to continue my enjoyment of the Miami (Ohio)
Redhawks.
