I have a bad feeling about this Final 4. I have a sinking suspicion that it’s going to be 4 #1 seeds. That is pretty awful. Once, about 15 years ago, someone won the pool by only picking seeds. I really hated that, and so I put in the Sacrificial Gutless Bracket. One of the best days of the tournament is when that bracket is eliminated from all possible payouts. That $5 from me that is worth paying so no one picks by the seeds. I can’t tell you how much I don’t want that to be the right answer in this or any season. Most of the years, it's out maybe on Thursday of the Sweet 16. Right now, it can’t win, but it is currently T7 in points and has a 1 in 8 chance of winning something. That’s not great.
I often enter a bunch of brackets that I find online. Most of the time they are there for fun, or
just to see if they are any good. Last
year, I won by picking only based on the Offensive Efficiency ratings from
KenPom.com. I entered a bracket for that
again this season, and it is already entirely out of contention. The bracket I entered using Ken Pom’s overall
rankings (not Offensive only or Defensive only) is currently sitting in 2nd
in points and has a 9.375% chance of winning something. I like winning as much as anyone, but I will
not feel comfortable at all if I win my own pool 2 years in a row. I would love to see some upsets to make that
a reality.
I was gaming out the direction of NCAA basketball in the future,
and here’s what I see happening. If I am
a Power 5 school, unless the high school player is a 5-star, can’t miss,
NBA-ready recruit, why would I go after them?
If you sign a 4-star guy, they probably are not sticking around for more
than a year or two before transferring somewhere else. I would spend all my time mining the non-Power
5 conferences for talent that is a little more developed. That pretty much guts those conferences, and
they would have to restock their lineups using 4-star or less recruits. It seems very much like a “rich get richer”
environment. In a world like that, it
seems like the Florida Atlantics and Loyola-Chicago’s of the world have
virtually no chance of making the Final 4.
In that world, it seems like we will get a lot more tournaments like
this one. 16 of the Sweet 16 teams
coming from the power conferences, and the small and mid-sized schools a fun
story for a day or two in the opening rounds, but not much more than that. I hope I’m wrong about that, but it seems
very plausible to me.
