It took some time, but we must bid adieu to all the perfect brackets. Daisy N. had the last one, but with Drake beating Missouri, everyone has at least one loss. It only took 12 games. Despite that, I wouldn’t say any of the upsets have been that big. None of the top 4 seeds in any region have lost, so my favorite type of upsets still haven’t happened. I really love upsets where the team that loses wasn’t supposed to lose in the next round anyway.

back to a 12-way tie for 1st.

Picks for UCLA: 163
Picks for Utah State: 109
Vegas Line: UCLA -5.5
This was another trendy upset pick. I would argue that both of these teams peaked
around January, and have kind of limped to the finish line. It’s halftime right now, and UCLA is up 12,
but there’s still another half to play. I
fully expect UCLA’s offense to go in the tank at some point in the second
half. The trick will be if Utah State
can score enough to catch up when it does.
Game 14:
Picks for St. John’s: 262
Picks for Omaha: 10
Vegas Line: St. John’s -18.5
St. John’s was my secret sneak pick. I had them ranked really high all season, and
I figured not many people would take them.
Well, the joke is on me right now, since Omaha is beating them in the
first half. Given my track record so
far, and where my picks are in the standings, the only reason anyone is listening
to me about these teams is because I am authoring this blog. I am really having a dismal tournament so
far, pick-wise. There’s a long way to
go. I can get back.
Game 15:
Picks for Michigan: 159
Picks for UC San Diego: 113
Vegas Line: Michigan -2.5
HERE WE GO!!!! The
single most important game of the tournament.
It’s a matchup from a team from the state I grew up in and the city I
currently live in. I went to exactly one
basketball game this season, and it was a UCSD game. My wife went there, so she gets offers for
tickets all the time. I like going. It’s
not a big gym, so there are no bad seats.
I also have been talking my wife’s ear off all season saying how good
UCSD is. They have been very good. They routinely blow teams out, but those are
Big West teams, not Michigan. I am
hoping for a huge upset here – and apparently I am not alone. 113 picks for a 12 seed is a lot. Go TRITONS!!!!
Game 16:
Picks for Texas Tech: 255
Picks for UNC Wilmington: 17
Vegas Line: Texas Tech -14.5
I’ll be shocked if I watch more than 5 minutes of this
game. I’m probably watching all 40
minutes of the UCSD game. Plus, I have
zero feel for Texas Tech or UNC Wilmington.
Fun fact, I asked Chat GPT to pick me a winner that wasn’t among the top
2 seeds in any region, and it recommended Texas Tech. Meh.
