NCAA Pool - After 2nd round

We finally had a buzzer-beater, although I thought Queen travelled on the last shot.  I got the Iowa State totally backwards, as Ole Miss dominated throughout.  Form held on the other 2 games, leaving us with 16 teams.  Only 1 double-digit seed is still alive (Arkansas), and most of the brackets look pretty chalky.

What that means is that probably a lot of people are still alive for one of the 5 payouts.  More on that later.

There are 23 people alive right now that still have all Elite 8 teams alive.  There are another 64 that have 7 of their last 8 alive.  That’s about 40% of the field.  What that means is that a lot of people are going to be alive for one of the top 5 spots, and that the next round promises to be a bloodbath of eliminations.

For those unfamiliar with my pools, from here on out, I’ll still be keeping track of the points, but I will be calculating the probability of each bracket to win each of the 5 payouts.  Once I have that, I can also determine what bracket / payout combinations will be mathematically eliminated in the next game.  I think it’s what separates my pool from any other than you could join.

All fo this is predicated on one thing.  It assumes that all outcomes are equally likely.  It’s too hard to do any other way.  What that means is that it treats a Arkansas v Purdue final the same as an Auburn v Duke final in terms of likelihood that it will happen.  We all know that’s not true, but it makes the math easier.

What that does give you is some strange percentages.  For instance, say you are the only person who picked Arkansas to win it all.  Your odds initially are going to look very good.  The reason for that is because there are lot of ways the games could play out, but in all of them that end with Arkansas winning, you probably win the pool.  That’s a lot of scenarios.  On the contrary, if you chose Florida, your probability of winning will look lower, since you are competing with a lot of other people that also have Florida – so your paths to winning are much fewer.

Anyway, I have to crank some numbers.  I should have something tomorrow.  I will post data as soon as I have it available.
