We are half way done with the day. My impression on the second set of games: Duke looks good. I know, that’s the kind of elevated commentary that keeps everyone coming back to the blog. There were only 2 questions in that game. One, will Duke hit 100 points (no), and will Mt. St. Mary’s hit 50 points (also no).
The other St. Mary’s game (not Mt. St. Mary’s, just St. Mary’s)
was better. As I thought might happen,
The Gaels staged a second half comeback to get the win against Vanderbilt. That prevents us from having a SEC v SEC
second round game. I am grateful for
that. We’re gonna get enough SEC as it
is.
Ole Miss looked good for a half. North Carolina looked good for a half. Ole Miss’s half was better than North
Carolina’s half. I thought Ole Miss
might pull off an epic choke. In the
end, I guess it’s even harder to come back from 20+ points down than I
thought. I would argue that this is why
I didn’t bet on North Carolina very often this season. One thing gamblers really treasure in a team
is consistency. I think you saw in just
the 2 North Carolina games how inconsistent they were.
Maryland looked every bit as good as I thought they
were. They pretty much crushed Grand
Canyon. They looked about as good as any
team today.
We have a change at the top of the leaderboard. Vanderbilt cost my brother a point, so he is
not tied at the top. However, due to him
having Clemson in the Sweet 16 and the person he is tied with still having all
16 teams live, he slips to 2nd place. Our new leader is Luis B. I knew Luis from way back in my HSPS days. He was one of the shop guys, and he would
come up to my desk to drop off paper entries every year and talk basketball. He’s having a great run so far. Good luck going forward, Luis!!!

221 entries are still alive from one or more of the regional
payouts. I am happy to see that the sacrificial
gutless bracket is out of all 4. That
means that you had to pick at least one upset to win a region. Picking only by the seeds sucks, so I’m glad
to see it is out.
It still has all 16 of it’s sweet 16 teams alive,
however. 32 brackets have that in
common. Another 78 brackets are only
missing 1 Swet 16 team.
There are 4 more games starting pretty soon, so LET’S
GO!!!!!
Game 25
Picks for Florida: 268
Picks for Norfolk State: 4
Vegas Line: Florida -28.5
Nice knowing ya’ Norfolk State. This should be a blowout. I have seen more Norfolk State games this
season than I care to admit, which is probably 2 or 3. They have zero chance in this one. Good run to get this far though.
Florida is a trendy pick to win it all. They were arguably playing the best
basketball going into the tournament, so if you are picking the “hot” team,
they are not a bad pick. Still, Alabama
was the hottest team going into the tournament 2 years ago, and they got
bounced in the Sweet 16, so you never know.
Game 26:
Picks for Kentucky: 256
Picks for Troy: 16
Vegas Line: Kentucky -11.5
I don’t have anything against Kentucky, but I hope they lose
this game. I really want to see a big
upset, and there aren’t many chances left for that to happen. Kentucky is overseeded as a #3, Troy isn’t
awful. The point spread isn’t astronomical. It could happen. I am beginning to suspect this may be the
first tournament I can think that hasn’t had any of its top 4 seeds in any
region lose. How sad….
Game 27:
Picks for Marquette: 154
Picks for New Mexico: 118
Vegas Line: Marquette -4
I guess this is our token “close” game in this set. I heard somewhere that Marquette had only
beat one tournament team in 2025 going into the Big East tournament, where they
managed to beat Xavier. That ain’t
great. New Mexico also didn’t finish
particularly strong in the Mountain West.
So, this looks like the match up of teams that peaked in 2024. Someone has to win though….
Game 28:
Picks for Arizona: 229
Picks for Akron: 34
Vegas Line: Arizona -14.5
As an alum of a MAC degree-granting institution, I feel like
I am obligated to cheer for the MAC school in the tournament (WMU, class of 98). I don’t think they are going to win this one,
but I am definitely rooting for the Zips.
As someone that administers a March Madness pool, I have to
say that I hate this matchup. Some
people don’t use the template. For those
that don’t, I have to hand-enter the teams into my scoring spreadsheet. Auto-fill works great for teams where no
other team in the column starts with the same letter. So, there is never another “D” team, so
anywhere Duke wins, I just have type “D” and Duke populates. There are a handful of places where that doesn’t
work, and it slows things way down. Utah
State / UCLA was a game like that. Memphis
/ Maryland in the 2nd round.
The real killer is when 2 teams like Michigan are in the same part of
the bracket as Michigan State. Then I
have to type almost the whole name out.
This is all a very long-winded reminder of how much I appreciate people
that use the template. I just copy and
paste those and they take seconds. I
honestly don’t even look at the picks.
