I feel somewhat vindicated by these first 4 games of the day. Baylor / Mississippi State wound up being a pretty close, but the whole time I was watching it, I was thinking – “This is nice, but neither of these teams is going to win any more than this one game”. I still think that’s true.
I wore my Robert Morris t-shirt today. I mentioned yesterday that they were the best
team against the spread all season, and they lived up to that hype today. At one point in the second half, they had a 1-point
lead with a three-point shot on the way.
If they had made that shot, that would have put them up 4, with about 6
minutes to go, and Alabama would have been in trouble. Instead they missed and Alabama came down the
court and retook the lead. Still, great
game by the Colonials. Plus, if you took
the 23.5 points, that was easy money for you.
I don’t think I watched more than 2 minutes of the Lipscomb
/ Iowa State game. This is what you need
to do as a favorite. Run out to a 15+
point lead and keep that up long enough that the other team just gives up. Great game if you like the Cyclones.
In the last game, I told you that nobody wanted to play Colorado
State. They looked great in the second
half. Plus, Memphis really started to
panic in the second half when they got down about 6 points. They started chucking up super deep 3s. I am of the opinion that if the other team
wants to do that, you should let them.
If they beat you by shooting from the parking lot or the rafters, good
for them. I’ll take that chance. Colorado State looked great. They’ll be a tough out.
We have a change in the leaderboard this morning. In q bit of karmic justice, the NCAA pool
gods have decided to bless my brother with 1st place all by
himself. I think this is some kind of
payment for hosting me for the first round games. We have 4 TVs going all the time, and we
never miss a game. It’s a lot, and it’s
always fun. So, enjoy 1st
place!!!!

regions. That still means a lot of
people still have a chance.

Game 21
Picks for Duke: 269
Picks for Mt. St. Mary’s: 3
Vegas Line: Duke -32.5
I like to bet on big favorites to win. It’s kind of how I made money over the course
of the basketball season. Even Vegas
wouldn’t touch this one. There were no
odds if you just wanted to pick Duke to win.
This is one of those games where they ask, “What do you think the
difference in the game was?” and the answer is “The opening tip”. The only drama here is whether or when Duke
will go over 100 points.
Game 22
Picks for St. Mary’s: 170
Picks for Vanderbilt: 102
Vegas Line: St. Mary’s -4
This promises to be a close one. It should be clear that I don’t have a lot of
love for lower-mid tier power conference teams, and that definitely fits
Vanderbilt. On the other hand, I love
small and mid-major teams with gaudy records.
Guess who I chose in this one…
Sadly for me, St. Mary’s is down at halftime. I have faith that they will make it a game. I’m hoping for an entertaining second half.
Game 23:
Picks for Ole Miss: 116
Picks for North Carolina: 156
Vegas Line: North Carolina -2
What a strange line.
North Carolina is essentially the “winner of play-in game”. Historically, people tend to avoid picking those
teams since they don’t really know what tema they are going to get. In this case, since San Diego State was one
of those teams, and I live in San Diego, I’m guessing that a lot of people
picked the play-in winner thinking it would be SDSU. Well, they may get the benefit of a good
North Carolina run asa side benefit if that’s what they were thinking.
I guess I’ll root for North Carolina here. Both of these teams are lower-end Power
conference teams, so I don’t really love either of them. Plus, there doesn’t seem to be an underdog
here. Ole Miss is the underdog by the
point spread, but not be the seed. North
Carolina is the underdog by the seed, but c’mon. Is North Carolina ever really going to be an
underdog against Ole Miss?
Game 24:
Picks for Maryland: 239
Picks for Grand Canyon: 33
Vegas Line: Maryland -10.5
I really, really like this Maryland team. I feel like they have been flying under the
radar all season. They could make a nice
run in this tournament. I say that
knowing that the winner of this game plays Colorado State in the next
round. They still have to get by Grand
Canyon, who has a pretty good track record in the NCAA tournament – beating a
5-seeded St. Mary’s team last season.
They most of the same group back, so it might not be as easy as the 10.5
point spread would suggest.
