I heard one of the commentators try to make this case – Sure, almost all the favorites won over the last 2 days, but that means the games from here on out will only feature the best of the best. Nice try. I think it’s probably a draw as to who could name more of the teams in these 2 groups: The only 16 seeds to beat a 1 seed – or the last 2 National Champions. Sure, a lot of people can name both – or neither, but I bet semi-die hard fans can come up with FDU and UMBC before they could say Connecticut and Connecticut. As such, this is one of the most boring tournaments I’ve administered.
Still, there is all sorts of excitement in the pool. People are getting points, and brackets are
still getting busted. Still, today was
an easy day to pick teams. Well,
slightly easier than yesterday.
Yesterday, our average number of correct games was 11.52. today, it was 11.99. The main difference: 4 people managed to got
16/16. Another 12 went 15/16. Yesterday, no one went 16/16 and only 5
people managed to get 15/16. 184 entries
did at least as well today as they did yesterday.

There are still 173 entries that are alive for one of the 4
Regional prizes. That’s pretty decent, I
think. I noticed that some people have
that 12.5% as their odds. That always
jumps out at me when the odds are nice and even like that. Essentially what that means is that they have
a strange pick to win the region that, if it happens, makes all the rest of the
games irrelevant. For example, Michael
Vill. #1 has a 12.5% chance to win the East region. The reason for that is because he is the only
person who picked Baylor to win that region.
As such, he wins if Baylor wins the region. None of the other games will matter. Since there are only 8 teams left, his odds
are 1/8, or 12.5% If Baylor loses, he is
out entirely. Steve Muc #1 has similar
odds in the West region with Drake. Those
kinds of picks come up when I figure out the odds to win the whole thing later.
After the 1st round, there are still 29 people
that have all 16 Seet 16n teams alive. I’ve
always thought that was a crucial stat. If
you have a team in a game, at least you have a chance to get points. If you have someone like Clemson in the Sweet
16, you really are choosing to root for the lesser of two evils. You want whoever has the fewest people
picking it to win, so chaos. In this
case, if you have Clemson, you are almost certainly better off having McNeese
State win against Purdue. You are losing
less ground to the field that way.
Speaking of which, that is the first game of the day
tomorrow. Since there are 8 games, and
it’s the weekend, they stagger them differently. They play 2 games back-to-back, and then they
play the last 6 staggered by an hour each, more or less. That’s not great for me, but I try to provide
updates after the 1st and 2nd games, and then between
every 2 games after that. Remember that
every win tomorrow and Sunday counts for 2 points.
Game 33:
Picks for Purdue: 120
Picks for McNeese St: 9
Picks that will get no points: 143
Vegas Line: Purdue -6.5
One of our few upsets in the first round gets to take on
Purdue. McNeese State seems to get the
first game so that they can talk about upstart McNeese State, and especially
Will Wade, who, right now is technically the head coach at NC State. I feel like this line was about the same as
the line for McNeese v Clemson in the last round, so I’m kind of hoping they
pull off another upset. I need at least
some double-digit seeds in the Sweet 16.
That would be fun. Purdue is a
perfectly acceptable team. I don’t have
much to say about them. They are a
decent Power 5 team. It would be an
great Ewing theory case if they won the whole thing one year after Zach Edey
left. That’s about the only interesting
thing I can think of about their run so far.
