Unless you happened to be watching the Marquette / New Mexico game, that was a pretty awful set of games. I confess to dozing off during some of the games. Usually when I start doing that, I catch myself and engage with one or more of the games. This time, I just let myself take a short nap. Not only was I kind of tired anyway, but just the one game was interesting. The rest were 100% snooze-fests. Honestly, I think this tournament so far has been pretty underwhelming. We are one game away from 0 top 4 seeds getting knocked out in the opening round. That sucks. I am a broken record – but I want bigger upsets.

regions. 30 people can still get all
remaining available points. Another 72
only are missing one Sweet 16 team. If
this keeps up, the Sweet 16 games are all going to be bloodbaths. Someone is going to have to go on a giant run
of 14/16 or something similar to win this.
I just hope I don’t need a tiebreaker.

We are finally here.
It’s the 2-time defending champion taking the court. Are they anywhere close to as good as they
were either of the two years they won it?
Nope. Are the good enough to beat
a mediocre Oklahoma team that I didn’t think should even be there? Yeah, probably. Bobby Hurley is still one of the best coaches
in the game, but when they took last in the Maui Invitational in November, I
thought that this is probably not going to be their year.
Game 30:
Picks for Illinois: 157
Picks for Xavier: 115
Vegas Line: Illinois -3.5
I am so proud of all of you.
For years, I have been harping on why it’s a good idea to take the
play-in winner, and it seems like maybe some of that has sunk in. 115 picks for Xavier is a lot – even for an 6/11
game. I have Illinois going pretty far,
but I think this first round has humbled me considerably, so rooting for my
bracket seems a little like a lost cause.
I guess I’ll just root for upsets.
Game 31:
Picks for Michigan State: 260
Picks for Bryant: 12
Vegas Line: Michigan State -17.5
Sadly, this is the last game in the first round to feature a
top 4 seed, so it’s the last chance for a big upset. I kind of don’t want that to happen. I know too many Michigan State fans to be
happy if that happens. They do have a
track record though. They lost to Middle
Tennessee State as a #2 about a decade ago.
See, I still remember that game.
I don’t remember any of the other 15/2 games where the 2 won. Upsets are just better.
Game 32:

OK. I keep saying that
I am rooting for upsets, and then I can’t always bring myself to do it. Those who have in the pool for many years probably
are aware of my long-standing loathing for all things Liberty University – related. In my collection of college t-shirts, I have
all D1 schools with a few exceptions.
One is HBCUs, since I can’t think of where, as one of the whitest people
on the planet, would wear one in public and feel comfortable. The other is Liberty University. My distaste for them pretty much stems from
Jerry Falwell and his family. Not going
to ever root for anyone associated with saying that 9/11 was God punishing
America for the gays. Plus, I think my
Oregon t-shirt is one of my favorites.
It has duck pictures in the armpits, so when you raise your arms in
celebration, everyone gets to see more ducks.
That’s pretty cool.
