I said I was going to update standing between the last set of two games. However, the end of the Wisconsin / BYU game was only about 15 minutes before the end of the Houston / Gonzaga game, so it didn’t seem to make much sense to do it then. I think that BYU / Wisconsin game was one of the best ones I’ve seen all tournament, and not just because it was an upset.
I only kind of paid attention to the Houston game. They seemed to be up 10-14 points most of the
game. Then, when I flipped it over at
the end of the BYU game, Gonzaga was only down 4 with about 3 minutes
left. I have no idea how that happened. They couldn’t pull it out though, so the 9-year
run of making the Sweet 16 for them is over.
I expect they’ll be back in contention to start a new streak next year.
A lot of people had the chance to get maximum points going
into today. Some did, and others flamed
out spectacularly. We had a grand total
of 1 person go 8/8, and that was Colston W.
He start ed the day in 78th place and finished the day in 5th. That’s a pretty good move. Another 8 people went 7/8, which is also
pretty impressive. My “upset special”
bracket got a total of 2 points. Ouch…..

just so I don’t get behind like I did today.

This line would make this the biggest point spread of the
Saturday games. It’s probably going to
be the end of the line for UConn after a 2-year run we probably will see once
in a generation. I don’t love UConn, but
an upset would be fun. I fully suspect
that I will be able to catch up on Duolingo or something else during this
one. I hope I’m wrong about that.
I’ve been thinking about the state of college basketball,
and why this year’s bracket is so chalky, and I keep thinking that NCAA
Basketball is starting to feel a little like Major League Baseball. If you are the Yankees or the Dodgers, or one
of these deep pocketed teams, you can reasonably contend for a title every
year. If you are some mid-major team,
like the Rockies or the Guardians, you have to do an exceptional job of
developing players quickly, because if they are good, you have a very short window
before your good player hits free agency and you can no longer afford him. I feel like College Basketball is like an
exaggerated version of that.
I think of the Florida Atlantic team that made the Final 4 2
year ago. I can name 4 players on that
team that are now on other teams.
Florida Atlantic was a mediocre, mid-major team this year. If those 4 guys were still there, they would
be fantastic. But, the coach left, and
then all the player left for more money.
So, if you are Florida Atlantic – or really any non-Power 5 team, you
kind of have a one-year shot at being good.
If you are successful, you are going to be gutted the following year. I’m not sure what you do about that or how to
level the playing field. It’s definitely
more fair to the players, but I’m not so sure the end product is better.
