One day down. I would have to say that my impression of the games today was that they weren’t all that good. Only 2 games today finished with a point spread of <5 points. One was the McNeese State upset, where they were up big and just took their foot off the gas. The other was the most disappointing game of the day, the UCSD game.
I am open to hearing the reasoning here, but I don’t understand
why UCSD held the ball for a contested three to tie the game with 19 seconds on
the clock down 3. If I were coaching, I
would have tried driving for a quick 2-pointer and then force Michigan to shoot
free throws. That opens up a bunch of
possible outcomes – including winning the game.
Still, I thought UCSD played pretty well in the second half. I watched them play against UC Irvine, and in
that game, they struggled with Irvine’s 7-footer. Michigan had 2, so it was extra hard for them. Anyway, I was proud of them. They looked tough. I hope the program can keep the momentum and
make the tournament more in the future.
Remember when I said that the leaders were all women? Well, the top 2 now are both women. Daisy and Irene are at the top. Fun fact, not only are they both women, they
also both entered >10 brackets each, so by some law of averages, thy were
always likely to have something at or near the top. Still, even with all those brackets, they
still had to nail all the games. Good
job to them.

A solid 58 people can still all remaining points. That’s kind of what you get when the only
upsets were 5-seeds or worse. All the
teams that were upset today were supposed to lose their next game – if you go by
the seeds. That kinda sucks. I want bigger upsets – preferably 1s or 2s,
although I’ll take the random 3 or 4. Let’s

There are only 16 people that are eliminated from winning
any of the regions. That means everyone
else is alive for one of those 4 $50 payouts.
I hope that keeps people at least a little interested, even if the rest
of their brackets look like hot garbage.
I get to sleep in a little bit tomorrow, since I don’t have
to wake up early to enter picks. That
will be nice. There are still 4 games
starting at 9:00 PST tomorrow
Game 17:
Picks for Mississippi State: 132
Picks for Baylor: 140
Vegas Line: Mississippi State -1
I was pretty excited about the 8/9 game that started the day
today, since I really liked Louisville. I
have history Creighton that goes back to buying into the “Dougie McBuckets is
going to lead them to the Final 4” days, so I was interested in watching that
game, and was disappointed that it was the first game.
This game, on the contrary, I care not one bit about. Mississippi State and Baylor are just kind of
“meh” to me. I actually wouldn’t have
even put Baylor in the field. All this
for the honor of getting pummeled by Duke in the 2nd round. At least I can get settled in early for
another long day.
Game 18:
Picks for Alabama: 264
Picks for Robert Morris: 8
Vegas Line: Alabama -23.5

I track all the games all season.
As part of that, I like to see what teams do really well against the
point spread. I always say that if a
team covers the spread in <33% of their games, you can reasonably fire the
coach. I think Miami-Florida was like
that this year, and their coach quit mid-season. On the other hand, if a team does really
well, you can usually count on that coach to get some job at a bigger
school. For most of the year UCSD was
the best team in America against the spread.
At the end of the season, they were edged out by Robert Morris. The moral of that long-winded story is that
you should probably take the 23.5 points if you are open to gambling on spreads.
Other than that, Alabama is at least a fun watch. They’ll probably put up 100 points in this
one.
Game 19:
Picks for Iowa State: 255
Picks for Lipscomb: 17
Vegas Line: Iowa State -14.5
I am always tempted to take Iowa State to do something in
the tournament. Historically, they have
had some of my favorite players. Then,
they disappoint me in the tournament. I
don’t think they will lose this one, but they do have a track record of getting
upset. Yes, I am still referring to them
losing to Hampton in the first round in 2001.
I know next to nothing about Lipscomb. Maybe I’ll have to learn something more about
them if they win.
Game 20:
Picks for Memphis: 131
Picks for Colorado State: 141
Vegas Line: Colorado State -1.5
What a strange game.
Memphis is a 5 seed, but last I saw, their starting point guard was
walking around in a boot. I made a small
fortune betting on Memphis to win games all season, so I like them a lot, but I
don’t know about this version of them.
Colorado State has been white hot over the last 3-4 weeks. Heading into the conference tournaments, I
thought Colorado State was playing really well.
Then, they ran thought the Mountain West tournament to get the auto
bid. I knew that I would not want to
face them in the first round.
Now they get to play a hobbled Memphis team. The outcomes here seem limitless. This is the game I am most interested in
tomorrow morning. I hope it’s a good
one. I have 10-15 point games.

get some sleep and do it all again tomorrow.
