Eliminations in the first 2 games on Thursday (Dayton / Stanford and Baylor / Wisconsin)

Good evening everyone.  After a much needed rest, games are back again tomorrow.  They will decide the Elite 8 teams from the South region and the West region.  They promise to be pretty good games, and I am especially interested in seeing San Diego State play.

As for the pool, the trick is to avoid being eliminated.  It's like playing in a poker tournament.  You don't have to have the biggest stack, but you need to survive while other people go out.  The last survivor wins.  Some people are starting from better position, but everyone alive still has a chance.

The point of this post is to tell everyone who is going home tomorrow is various teams win.  I can start off by saying that for the first time I think I can remember, the first game of the day, Dayton/Stanford will result in exactly no one losing any ground to anyone.  No one gets eliminated from any kind of contention regardless of how that game plays out.  It's not unusual for there to be one surprise team in a region.  What that usually means is that if you took the favorite, your odds go up if they beat the Cinderella.  For everyone else, you want the favorite to lose to help your chances (because the brackets with the favorite can move too far ahead of you).  In the case of Dayton / Stanford, there is no favorite.  It's all Cinderella.

Only 2 people actually can gain points in this game.  There is a theory that if you pick upsets, you probably pick too many upsets.  So, any bracket that picked Stanford in the Elite 8 probably has a whole lot more upsets going on in the same bracket.  Such is the case this year.  Chris L. #3 has Stanford in the Elite 8, but he is already eliminated from all contention compliments of a North Carolina / Wichita State final.  Sally R. has Stanford in the Elite 8 as well, so she only stands to gain if they win. Even if they don't, she won't be eliminated from anything.

That means everyone can relax during the first game - or flip over to the other game.  It promises to be a bloodbath of brackets.

Usually I put the caveat that these are only single game eliminations, and I guess that still holds here.  I didn't figure out the combination of the two game eliminations.  For example, you may be safe is Dayton wins as a stand alone game.  You may also be safe if Baylor wins as a stand alone game, but you could be eliminated if both Dayton AND Baylor win.  I didn't calculate those eliminations.

I will recap everything at the end of the night, so check there to see if your bracket fell that way.

In between games, I will also try to post single game eliminations for the second set of games based on the results of the first games.

Good luck!!!!!!
