March Madness - After one day

Well, those games took a lot longer than anyone probably thought they would.  Villanova won with the biggest margin, but they certainly didn't look too good for most of that game.  The other three games came down to the last minute in all cases.  Texas won on a buzzer beater.  Louisville was losing by 3 with less than 3 minutes to go to Manhattan, and SDSU for some inexplicable reason decided to throw away an inbound pass and went to overtime.

I just heard that there were 4 overtime games today for the first time in NCAA history.  Crazy.

I watched most of the SDSU/NMSU game, and I loved watching Sim Bhullar.  I think they could just throw the ball in his general direction and no one could really stop him from getting it.  SDSU forced him into foul trouble though, so he probably wasn't as much of a factor as NMSU would have liked.  Tough break for the Aggies.  Good for the Aztecs though.  They'll face the Bison next.

So, all 4 favorites won, so it should come as no surprise that a lot of people got all 4.  A whopping 133 brackets went 4/4 tonight.  Another 101 went 3/4.  The average was 3.47 / 4.  Amazingly, David S. #4 managed to go 0 / 4.  He was the only one.  Sorry man.

We still have one person that is perfect.  Robert H. #2 was the only bracket to make it through the day unscathed.  That's pretty impressive given the number of overtime games that could have swung either way.  108 brackets managed to not lose any Sweet 16 teams, including Jim D. #2 and Peter J. #5 who only got 9 games right all day, but none of the 7 they missed were advancing to the Sweet 16.

For those who remember their stats, the mode, median and mean for day 1 was 12 in each instance.  Interesting.  The average amount lost for everyone was -7.91.  That's obviously skewed for the teams that lost a lot of advanced picks.  The median losses were -5.

There are more games to come tomorrow.  Here's the breakdown of the first four:

Duke: 238
Mercer: 9

Baylor: 178
Nebraska: 69

New Mexico: 177
Stanford: 70

Arizona: 247
Weber State: 0

I'm thinking the Arizona game will be a total snooze-fest, which is fine.  The other games should be interesting.  I would LOVE for Mercer to win.  They are from the same conference that brought us Florida-Gulf Coast last year, so you never know.

As for me, I'm going home for a good night's sleep.  My plan for tomorrow is to wear my Eastern Kentucky T-Shirt.  My plan is to wear the lowest seeded team that I own a T-shirt for.  I counted, and I have something like 42 of the 68.

Good luck to everyone and good picking to those that had a good day.  For those that didn't, there's always tomorrow.  :)

Klei
