The timing of the second 4 games was a little strange. The first game of the 4 finished really early. It was Marquette beating Vermont. As I write this, the game probably finished over an hour ago. I kind of remember what happened. It wasn’t that close at the end. Marquette only turned the ball over 5 times all game. You are probably winning every game when you do that. It should make the game against Michigan State pretty good. They mentioned that Shaka Smart had lost something like 7 NCAA games in a row prior to today. I didn’t realize his run at Texas was that bad. No wonder he wanted a change of scene.
The next 2 games ended at roughly the same time. We finally had our first upset of the day,
with Pitt beating Iowa State. I watched
part of that game, and it was not one you are going to watch again if you were
a Cyclones fan. I didn’t think they were
going to reach 40 points. I was checking
the box score, and they shot 23.3% from the field and 2/21 from 3. Those are some pretty horrible numbers. I’m sure Iowa State has a good team in them,
but they certainly didn’t show up today.
Maybe it was the extra day for the play-in winner. I swear there may be something to that
theory. Play-in games that have 2 days
to prepare are 1/1 all time. I’m just
saying…..
My guess is all the people that have Connecticut going
pretty far were sweating that game pretty hard at halftime. Iona looked pretty game before UConn started
pulling away in the second half. This was
a pretty dominant second half by UConn.
So, we have another change at the top of the standings. Noah N. is at the top in points with 20. He wins the tiebreaker with all the other 20
point sheets because he has lost the fewest points. He still is one of 2 brackets (with Melody
T.) that still have all 16 Sweet 16 teams alive. We need more upsets to make that more
interesting.

This is my t-shirt / kiss of death game for the day. I managed to find my Fairleigh Dickinson shirt
this morning. Like yesterday, if they
manage to pull off this upset, I’m going to try to be seen in as many public
spaces as possible. I will say that I
always had faith and that I KNEW they could pull off the upset. It will all be a lie, but it will be fun
until someone asks me where Fairleigh Dickinson is located or what my connection
to them is. At that time, I will remind
them that my team pulled off an epic upset, so shut up…. Honestly, Purdue has a 7’4” player of the
year candidate and FDU is the shortest team in D1. That doesn’t usually add up to an epic upset,
but that’s why you play the game.
Game 26
Kentucky / Providence
Vegas Line: Kentucky -6
Picks for Kentucky: 184
Picks for Providence: 48
This seed was inconceivable at the start of the season for
Kentucky. They were loaded with talent,
and they had the returning Player of the Year.
A #1 seed seemed like the most likely outcome. Then they started playing games. At one point during the season, they lost at
home to a dreadful South Carolina team and they were in real danger of missing
the tournament altogether. They
eventually figured some things out and won some bigger games. Still, this is about where they belong based
on their record. I think that Providence
is a sneaky good pick here. Sneaky good
picks haven’t exactly fared too well so far.
Also, if you look at where my entries are in the pool, I’m not sure how
much you should be listening to me anyway, but a 4 point underdog isn’t too
bad. Plus, the Big East has been looking
pretty solid so far.
Game 27
Miami-Florida / Drake
Vegas Line: Miami -2
Picks for Miami-Florida: 144

During the season, I keep my own rankings for all the teams
in D1. At the end of the season, I had
Miami ranked #19. I had Drake ranked
#29. That doesn’t seem like a 5/12
game. That sounds more like a 5/8
matchup. The good folks at the NCAA
decided that Drake wasn’t all that great based mostly on the fact that they don’t
play in a power conference. The 12 seeds
at 0/3 so far, so this is the last chance for that particular upset to
happen. Based on the Vegas line, this is
the one most likely to happen. If it
sounds like I am pulling for this, you are absolutely correct. More upsets!!

Game 28
Gonzaga / Grand Canyon
Vegas Line: Gonzaga -15.5
Picks for Gonzaga: 227
Picks for Grand Canyon: 5
This distribution feels more like a #2 or #1
distribution. Everyone loved Gonzaga in
this one. I feel like people are big on
Gonzaga again after getting burned a few years in a row of having them come in
as a #1 seed and then get upset early.
This year, they played a lot of really good teams early in the season,
and lost a lot of those games. At some
point in the season, they lost at home to Santa Clara. It’s only recently that they’ve looked like
the top 10 team people were expecting at the start of the season. I think that’s why people are high on them
again. I think people like Gonzaga as
more of an underdog than a front-runner.
I’m not expecting a whole lot from Grand Canyon. Then again, I wasn’t expecting anything from
Princeton either.
