The nice thing about having the team I care most about playing in the first game is that you know if you are going to be happy most of the day, or you are going to be grouchy. The cherry on top of that is if your team makes the game a runaway so that you don’t have to worry about losing for about the last 15 minutes of game time. That’s the San Diego State team I am used to seeing. I’m really, really happy for them. They’ve had marginal success in the tournament in years past, including the year they finished the season 30-2 and they cancelled the tournament because of COVID. This feels pretty good. I am going to pull for Maryland later today, but if SDSU can play this good, they have a good chance against anybody.

If you remember my commentary on the opening game with Tennessee,
you know that they are a team that has a history of choking in the tournament. This Duke team is playing about as good as
anybody in the tournament right now, so it makes some sense they are picked in
the way they are. This is also a very
important game given that Purdue is no longer a potential matchup in the next
game. It’s a real opportunity for one of
these teams.
I also want to comment on how the NCAA people pick the
seeds. In years past, they used to look
at “recent games” as a factor. They
stopped doing that a few years ago. If
they still had that criteria, I douby Duke would have been a 5, and I also doubt
Tennessee would have been a 4. If you
assume every game is the same over the course of the year, this seeding makes
sense. As of right now, it doesn’t. Then again, maybe they can play the disrespect
card all the way to victory today. We
will see.
I was curious yesterday after FDU beat Purdue as a 23 point
underdog. Was that the biggest upset of
the season? Well, given the timing of
it, probably. Based on the numbers, it
wasn’t. First, it’s good to know just how
many games this season even had a point spread of 23 points or more. There were 182 games where the line was 24
points or more. Only 9 of those games
were in 2023. Almost all of them were in
the nonconference part of the season.
So, in those games, only 3 times did the underdog actually
win the game. The biggest upset of the
season was Iowa on 12/21. They were at
home playing against Eastern Illinois.
They were 31.5 point favorites and they lost by 9. Ouch….
The second biggest upset of the season was TCU on 11/14. I would argue that this is the game that
knocked TCU out of its lofty pre-season ranking. They played Northwestern State at home and
were 24.5 point favorites. They lost by
1. Northwestern State finished the
season 22-11 and finished 2nd in their conference to TAMUCC, so this
maybe shouldn’t have been a 24.5 point line anyway.
Third was FDU vs. Purdue yesterday. It was the most impactful, that’s for
sure. Lets hope for more craziness today!!!
