A few years ago, I wrote a really cool macro where you picked a game and the winner of said game, and the macro would go into all the spreadsheets I have and determine all the eliminations for you. It was fantastic. Then my hard drive got corrupted and I lost it. My goal in the offseason is to recreate that tool because it takes too long to do it by hand between games.
All right. One good
game and one absolutely terrible game. The
good game was the first one between Kansas State and Florida Atlantic. Fun fact – 0 people got that game right. That means we can close the book on this
region. Remember that every region has
32 points you can get out of it if you get every game right. There was a tie at the top for this region
between Chad L. #2 and Max A. #2 with 16.
That was the best. You would get
8 points if you picked the winner of the region, so the BEST anyone did was get
1/2 the games wrong. Both of these guys
went 6/8 in the first round, 3/4 in the Sweet 16 and had Kansas State in the
Elite 8. Not terrible, but I think it
will be hardest region in which to get points.
Also, I doubt either of them is reading this because they are both
eliminated from everything and actually can not get any more points in this
tournament.
Congratulations to Florida Atlantic. Also, congratulations to people that are
alive because they need a chaos final. There
are a bunch of people that had something like Texas over Purdue or Connecticut
over Marquette in the finals that need people to lose points in order to stay
alive. Those people are probably pretty
big Owl fans right now.
The other game was gawd-awful. Gonzaga was going to have a hard time winning
that game the way it was going anyway, but once Drew Timme got his 3rd
and then 4th fouls, I turned to my wife and said, “Gonzaga will be
lucky to stay within 20 points”. I love
it when I’m right. I haven’t been right
too often in this tournament, but I feel like I got that one. I watched the UCLA game where Timme accounted
for roughly 87% of the Gonzaga offense.
Even when he’s not scoring, he’s the focal point. Once it looked like they were going to be
without him for a while, I just didn’t see how they were going to score – and UConn
was playing so well anyway. It was just
a disaster.
In theory, Timme still has one more year of eligibility,
because of the COVID rule, but it looks like he may call it a career and go
play oversees or something. Guys like
him don’t really get drafted very high in the modern NBA. Best of luck to him.
That region is now complete, and we can crown the champion
of the region. Congratulations to Elliot
N. He managed to get 31/32 in this
region. The only game he missed was the
first round Northwestern / Boise State game.
I am very impressed with that.
But, like the high scorers in the East region, Elliot N. is also completely
out of the pool and also can’t get anymore points. Who knew that doing so well in a region would
correlate with having 0 chance to win later on?
Seems counterintuitive.
Rest assured, someone will win this pool. We are down to 5 games left, and we are also
down to only 21 entries that can actually win anything. Nobody at this point has over a 45% chance to
win anything, so there is a ton up fro grabs.
With the football pool, the finale is often-times anticlimactic because
someone locks up 1st place before they play the last game. In the March Madness pool, everything is
weighted towards the last games, which makes them much more dramatic. With as many entries as we get, the end will
always look like some version of this.
Even if it was all #1 & #2 seeds, there would still be about the
same number of people alive at this point – they would just be different
people.
I do want to point one bracket out. Currently sitting in 3rd place
with a 40.625% chance of winning something – and also with the cleanest
remaining bracket is Charlotte N. Here’s
some text I got when Charlotte’s entry came in: “this one is my 5 year-old daughter, Charlotte who
picked based on mascots using a Bracketfight bracket generator. Highly skewed
towards dogs and her school mascot bulldog schools, only upset by my school
SDSU and her Aunt's school the Horned Frogs.” I love this….
This is for all the people out there that use the excuse that they don’t
know anything about college basketball as a reason not to enter the pool. Truth is, you don’t have to… I tell people this all the time. If anyone ever asks me hoe to win these
pools, the answer is always – whichever way wins. There is no right way. It’s impossible to predict. To rub some more salt in everyone’s wounds,
Charlotte N. was also the only person to correctly pick FDU over Purdue. In my mind, that and her performance since
make her a winner already. She has UConn over
SDSU in the Final, so that seems very plausible right now. Not sure what a 5-year old girl spends a
bunch of money on, but it would be interesting to find out.

One more word about ties. Some
of you may have noticed that you are still alive for multiple spots. Some of that is because if there is a
tiebreaker between 2nd and 3rd, you have a 50/50 chance
of getting 2nd or 3rd, so I divide the probability up
between the two. Most of you didn’t
submit a tiebreaker, or if you did, I didn’t really look at it. If it looks like we will need one, I’ll reach
out to the people involved to get a tie-breaker. It will be the total score of the championship
game. Closest person to the total wins
(you can go over – it’s not The Price is Right). I personally hate tie-breakers, so I hope it
doesn’t come down to that. Right now,
there are 3 ways 1st place could end in a tie. There is at least one way we could have a
3-way tie for 2nd, 3rd & 4th. I’ll keep everyone posted on whether those
will be in play or not.
Good Luck!!!!!
