Well, that first game lived up to the 8/9 hype. West Virginia looked really good early, but that game was back and forth all game long. Only one person had West Virginia out to the Elite 8, and nobody had them in the Final 4 – so not a lot of points lost on that one.
However, the second game was not so kind to people. As I somewhat alluded to, I thought Virginia
was overrated all season long. When Virginia
had a double digit lead in the first half, I thought that it was going to be one
of those games where the higher seed just keeps the lower seed at arm’s length
for the whole game. Then the Paladin’s
came all the way back and won. I love
it. I always root for one upset in every
group of 4 games. Technically, Maryland
wasn’t an upset by the seeds, but West Virginia was favored. Now Virginia losing means that anyone picking
only by the seeds loses not just this game, but the next one as well. Fantastic!
I will say that the lower seeded teams this year look
tougher than in years past. A lot of the
lower and mid-major teams that make up the 12-16 seeds were #1 or #2 seeds in their
conference tournaments. With the
exception of SE Missouri State and Texas Southern (who both lost in the play-in
games), I think virtually all of them were conference leaders. That means we may be in for more upsets to
come.
Compliments of Furman, we are already down to only 8 perfect
brackets. If anyone thinks that some day,
someone will ever pick a perfect bracket – let me disabuse you of that. It will never happen in my lifetime, or any
of your lifetimes. It is too hard.
Virginia also had a lot of downstream effects. 7 people had Virginia in the Final 4,
including 2 people that had them in the Championship game. Ouch….
Those brackets are not out of the running after two games, but they are
hurting for sure.
Missouri wound up pulling away from Utah State, which means
that the Mountain West I now 0/2 in the NCAAs this year. I was really hoping for better. It also means that we are down to 3 perfect
brackets after just 3 games. Amazingly,
72 people are now 0/3. That is the start
of a very hard tournament to predict. I
suspect everyone will get on the board with Kansas, but do far it’s been a real
struggle.
As predicted, Kansas rolled to a pretty easy victory over
Howard. That puts everyone on the
board. No one is going to get shut out
in the 2023 NCAA pool. Congratulations
team…. The only other take away from
this game was that Kansas probably could have scored 100 points. Also, I kinda liked that the Howard uniform
didn’t say Howard. It said, “The Mecca”. It was like they were using their alternate
road uniforms. Bold choice, Howard. I like it.
This will be the first rankings. I do 2 rankings every year. The first one is just based on points. The tiebreaker is how many points you have
lost. So, if you had Virginia making it
to the Sweet 16, you have already lost 3 points (one for the 1st
round, and 2 for the 2nd round).
The second ranking is a net points ranking. All that is is the sum of the points you’ve
won minus the points you have lost. It
gives you a better idea of how healthy your bracket is.

There isn’t a ton of difference in these, but that’s because
we’ve only played 4 games and only the people that had either Virginia or Utah
State going anywhere have lost more than a point or two. It gets messier as we go.
Here are the second set of games…. And I am really sweating the SDSU game right
now.
Game 5:
Alabama / Texas A&M Corpus Christi
Vegas Line: Alabama -24.5
Picks for Alabama: 232
Picks for TAMUCC: 0
This is our first game where no one picked one side. As some of you may know, I gave a t-shirt for
virtually all of the NCAA D1 schools except HBCUs, Liberty and some of the
newer teams to DI. Every year, I pick
the team with the longest odds to win and wear them for the day. Today, I get to wear my TAMUCC t-shirt. If they pull off the upset, I am going to try
my hardest to be in seen in as many public spaces as possible. Do I think they are going to win: No. They are almost assuredly not going to
win. I would love it if they did, but I
feel pretty good that they are not going to.
I’ll still pull for them. Go
Islanders!!!!
Game 6:
San Diego State / College of Charleston
Vegas Line: SDSU -4.5
Picks for SDSU: 179
Picks for Charleston: 53
OK, as an alumnus of San Diego State, this game scares the crap
out of me. If you think this game looks
eerily like the Virginia / Furman game before, you are not imagining
things. There are some slight differences
in my mind. For me, Virginia was overly rated. I think San Diego State is pretty close to
correctly rated here (maybe sliiiightly underrated). Charleston is grossly underrated. I had them ranked for most of the
season. They have only lost 3 games all
season. They are really good. Also, the line started at -5 and is now -4.5. As I mentioned before, you don’t want the line
to be moving away from you. I’m probably
going to be watching this one with my eyes covered for most of the game. Also, I hate to say it, but SDSU doesn’t not
have a strong record in the NCAAs. I’m
hoping they can turn that around this year, but College of Charleston is tough
team to do that against.
Game 7:
Arizona / Princeton
Vegas Line: Arizona -14.5
Picks for Arizona: 229
Picks for Princeton: 3
You know, prior to UMBC, there was 2 #16 seeds that almost
pulled upsets in the first round. Murray
State almost beat Michigan State with Popeye Jones. They took Michigan State and Steve Smith to
OT before losing. Prior to that, there
was Princeton losing by 1 on to Georgetown.
I would argue that some of my favorite games to watch in the tournament
were Princeton running their backdoor cutting offense. I remember one year, they beat UCLA on what
seemed like nothing but a constant stream of back door layups. It was fantastic. I haven’t watched much of Princeton this season,
but I heard they were running a similar offense. If they are, it might be wildly
entertaining. If not, Arizona may run
them out of the gym. This is not the
same Arizona team I fell in love with last season, but they are still verty
good.
Game 8:
Arkansas / Illinois
Vegas Line: Arkansas -1.5
Picks for Arkansas: 124
Picks for Illinois: 108
So, I mostly follow college basketball, but every so often,
I will look at the projected NBA draft.
I remember looking at the projections before the college basketball
season started, and Arkansas has something like 3 projected 1st
round draft picks. Given that they beat
Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 last year, and with all that talent, I thought this was
going to be a return to national prominence for Arkansas. So what are they doing in the 8/9 game? Who knows.
They never lived up to that potential.
They deserve to be in this game based on how they played, but they were
supposed to be so much better. I don’t have
a great feel for Illinois. I thought
they would be better as well. One of their
seasons is going to end in pretty big disappointment. For the rest of us, this game is really just
one point. The winner gets Kansas.
Good luck to everyone!!!!!
