For a game I didn’t think I was going to care about, I was surprised at how entertained I was to watch it. There was a saying, I think by football coach Bill Parcells that goes, “You are what your record says you are”. I think people forget that sometimes. Kentucky started the NCAA season as the #4 ranked team in the country, and all season people expected them to play like it. In truth, they were probably as good a team as we saw today – a #6 seed. That’s not terrible, but people think it’s a let down based on their assumptions from earlier in the season. That was clearly reflected in the point spread going into this game where Kentucky was a 3.5 point favorite.
I also didn’t watch a ton of Kansas State this season, but I
am a sucker for two types of players.
One, is freakishly tall players like Zach Edey or Tacko Fall or my
all-time favorite player, Manute Bol.
The other are do-it all point guards.
If you haven’t watched Markquis Nowell for Kansas State play yet, do
yourself a favor and check him out in the next game. He’s fantastic. He scores, gets assists and can shoot free
throws – all at about 5’8”. He may be my
favorite player to watch still alive in this tournament. Just wildly entertaining.
Another change at the top of the standings. I thought the previous leaders were a little
bit of fool’s gold, since they really didn’t have clean brackets, they just had
amassed a lot of points in the first two rounds. Michael S. may breaks that trend. He is currently #1 in both rankings, which
puts him in great shape for now. Not
only does he have the most points currently, but he also has one of cleanest
brackets going forward. People that want
to win this should probably pay attention.

I noticed that chalk has won both games today, so I’m hoping
for at least 2 upsets in these last 6 games.
I don’t want the gutless “by the seeds” bracket to get any higher.
Game 43
Marquette / Michigan State

I’m of two minds on this one. In the brackets that I have that have an
actual chance to win anything, I have Marquette all the way to the finals. But, I do like upsets, and I tend to root for
Michigan State. Michigan State also used
to have a really good track record in the tournament. Save for one season, Shaka Smart, does not
have a great track record. The line is only
3, so it seems possible to see an upset here.
I’m calling it a win/win regardless of the outcome.
Game 44
Connecticut / St. Mary’s

It’s the game between 2 teams that the computers both
love. Both have arguably been underrated
all season long. I don’t think I ever
had Connecticut outside of my top 15 all season. I also had St. Mary’s ranked all season, many
weeks of that they weren’t actually ranked.
I am really curious as to how this game plays out. Both of these teams could wind up making it
all the way to the Regional final, if not further.
Game 45
Baylor / Creighton

I am surprised that the picks are this close. Based on the line, it seems like they should
be, but I would have thought people were burned enough times with Creighton to
shy away from them. I remember Douggy
McBuckets when they were the talk of the tournament, only to flame out
spectacularly. I don’t think they’ve ever
had a good run. Plus, this is another
team similar to Kentucky. They were
pre-season top 10, I think. Their record
doesn’t reflect that. Some of that was
injuries, but Baylor won this tournament a few years ago, and still has some of
the players from that team. I don’t get
this line, but someone’s got to win.
Maybe this is the upset I’ve been asking for.
Game 46
Florida Atlantic / Fairleigh Dickinson

223 of us are getting nothing out of this game. If you have Florida Atlantic,
congratulations. You have bragging
rights over all of us. This is the
biggest point spread of the day, and also probably the most irrelevant game of
the day. It’s a good story for either
team, so I recommend just enjoying some basketball during this one.

Indiana / Miami-Florida

Do you realize that no 12s beat a 5 this year? All 5 seeds advanced to the second
round. Technically, the only #5 currently
out is Duke. The winner of this one
takes on my Houston squad, so I hope it goes into quadruple overtime. Also, do you realize that there have been
exactly 0 overtime games this year? I’m
sure the BW3 people are hating that, as they developed some special ad deal to
run when OT happens. It’s worked well
for them in the past. Maybe this one
will break the streak. Seems plausible. Anyway, it’s a 4/5 game, so it should be
close.
Game 48
Gonzaga / TCU

All aboard the Gonzaga hype train!!!! 190 people for a 3 seed?! That’s a ton.
I’m not saying people are wrong for picking the Zags here, I’m just
saying that people all seem to have the same idea about them. Maybe everyone is right, and the Zags steamroll
the Horned Frogs, but this seems a little skewed to me. You know I’m always rooting for an upset, so
maybe this can be upset #2 on the day (assuming I get one somewhere else).
I was watching games yesterday, and it occurred to me that
Tennessee also has a disconnect between their nickname and their mascot. They are the Volunteers, but the mascot is
some kind of dog. I’m sure I’ll find
more examples, the more I look.
So, I’ll keep updating the rankings after every game, but after
the last game I get to crunch some numbers and figure out who is alive for 1st
place. It will take me longer to figure
out 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, since ties are
involved, but I’ll be putting out fewer rankings totals at that time. It will be more like the matrix with
odds. You’ll see what I mean when I have
them available.
