There have been a lot of upsets this tournament, and it’s hard to know who you should be rooting for, especially if the team you picked to win the next game isn’t actually playing in that game. For example, let’s say I picked Arizona to make the Elite 8. Should I be rooting for Princeton or Creighton in the next game? Do I care at all? How important are certain teams to me winning this pool? I have all the answers for you.
If you are still alive for 1st, I can look at all
the paths you have to win and look at what teams appear the most in those
paths. The more times a team appears,
the more important that team is to you winning.
It also shows you games that are “must-win” games and which you don’t care
about at all.
Here’s how it works.
I’ll use Derek B. as an example:

Out of the 32,000+ ways this tournament can be played out,
he has 513 paths where he wins or finishes in a tie-breaker for 1st
place.
In the above table, you can see that Xavier wins their next
game in every path. So, if Xavier loses,
Derek B. can no longer win 1st place. This makes sense, since he has them losing in
the Championship game.
Something Derek B. may not realize is that Alabama winning
the next game is the 3rd most important game for him in the next
round. That may come as a surprise because
he has Virginia in the Elite 8. However,
if San Diego State wins, maybe people that get points for SDSU pass him in the
standings and he can’t recover.
It also shows that the winner of the Tennessee / Florida Atlantic
game essentially means nothing as far improving his chances of winning or
hurting them. The 50% there could have
just as easily showed as Tennessee 50%.
There is a lot of interesting stuff in here. A lot of it you may not have been aware of. If you see 100%, you will certainly see your
name in the “potential eliminations” for that game. Those are “must win” games for you.
