I mentioned that I would post the spreadsheet that I am using to keep score. There are 2 things to check:
1.
If your bracket is there. If you think your bracket should be in there,
but don’t see it, let me know. I entered
all the brackets that I received, but it’s possible I missed one.
2.
If you didn’t use the spreadsheet I sent as a
template, make sure the picks listed match what you have in your bracket. I had to hand type all the picks to get them
in, and I may have mis-typed something.

It was a good run for the Islanders of TAMUCC, but it looks
like Alabama is going to cruise to an easy victory. Once again, the t-shirt curse comes
through. Everyone gets a point. Congratulations!!!
Wow. I really had to
sweat the San Diego State game. Not only
did I have to sweat out the game, I had to listen to Stan Van Gundy act like
the College of Charleston’s Sports Information Director the entire second half. It seemed like he was lobbying for a spot on
the coaching staff or something. I didn’t
need that. But, they won, so I am
happy. They didn’t look that great, but
they managed to win. Now they get the
Furman Paladins.
That also drops our number of perfect brackets to 2. Dan D and Tim D. #2 are now 6/6. Congratulations to those two. You don’t get anything for being the last
team to lose a point other than bragging rights, but that’s not nothing. It’s close to nothing, but not exactly
nothing.
Another bad result of this game is that if you don’t turn
the channel fast enough, you wind up having a bunch of crappy TruTV
programming. It is…. Not good.
Ummm.. WHAT
THE!!!!!! OMG!!!!! I knew Arizona wasn’t as good as they were
last year, but I didn’t not have any idea that they would lose to
Princeton. PRINCETON?!?!?!? They were 14.5 point underdogs. I didn’t even think they were the best team
in the Ivy League. That’s nuts. Obviously, it crushes a lot of people. It totally eliminates any perfect brackets
that were left over. At this point it
really just matters how much damage Arizona losing did to your bracket. If you had someone like Baylor or Alabama
coming out of the South region, you probably are pretty happy right now.
Some perspective: 208
people had Arizona in the Sweet 16. 150
people had them in the Elite 8. 73
people had them in the Final 4. 42
people had them in the Finals and 18 people had them winning the whole thing
(Tied for 6th most). That’s a
lot of red ink.
I remember growing up watching this tournament. There were years and years when a 15 never beat
a 2. Now, it seems to happen most years. Remember St. Peter’s last year? or Oral
Roberts? Or Florida Gulf Coast? Or Lehigh? Or Norfolk State? It happens more and more. That being said, we still haven’t seen any of
the other #2 seeds.
I was commenting to someone just yesterday that I could make
a case for why the top 6 teams in terms of picks would NOT win it. I said that Arizona or Gonzaga were teams
that I thought didn’t have any glaring issues.
That, as they say, is why they play the games. Yikes…..
I thought we might have a close finish in the Illinois game,
but Arkansas started out with a big lead and then held on to win by 10. Honestly, it was a bit of a nice relaxing
game after the Princeton game.
The good news for everyone, is that a lot of people are
still alive. There is a 6 way tie for 1st
place in points, and an 8-way tie for the top based on net points. There are only 3 brackets left that still
have all 16 of their Sweet 16 teams still alive (Damien R. #4, Noah N. & Melody
T.). That’s kind of where you want to
be.

Game 9
Auburn / Iowa
Vegas Line: Auburn -1.5

This seems like a classic 8/9 game. Both of these teams were ranked during the
season. Both of them faded a little bit
toward the end of the season. Also, only
32 people had the winner of this game going beyond this game. Fun game to watch, but I probably not too important
in the grand scheme of things.
Game 10
Duke / Oral Roberts
Vegas Line: Duke -6.5
Picks for Duke: 196
Picks for Oral Roberts: 36
Now this is a game people can start to sweat out. It’s the dreaded 5/12 game, but it doesn’t
feel like the a typical 5/12 game. A lot
of people have picked Duke to win the region.
45 people have Duke winning this region.
For perspective, the 5 seeds in the other regions have 16 people winning
their region total (SDSU: 8, Miami: 6, St. Mary’s: 2). It should come as no surprise that this Duke
team is the #5 seed the most people think is going to win. That being said, Oral Roberts is no
slouch. They have the same high scorer
that led them to the Sweet 16 a few years ago, plus another 7’4” transfer from
Arkansas to help down low. This may not
be the easy game that Duke is hoping for.
Game 11:
Texas / Colgate
Vegas Line: Texas -13.5
Picks for Texas: 225
Picks for Colgate: 7
So, the line is probably right here. Texas is really good. They just won the conference tournament in
the toughest conference I think I have ever seen since I’ve been watching
college basketball. #2 makes sense for
them. That being said, Colgate is really
good for a #15 seed. They have a lot of veteran
players and they hit a lot of 3s. That’s
usually the recipe for an upset. I don’t
know if it will be enough to pull off the upset here, but I wouldn’t be
surprised if the game is in single digits coming down the stretch.
Game 12:
Northwestern / Boise State
Vegas Line: Northwestern -1.5
Picks for Northwestern: 100
Picks for Boise State: 132
As a group, we really loved the Mountain West this
year. I think that every game of theirs,
we, as a group took the Mountain West team more than whoever they were
playing. We chose Utah State over
Missouri. We took San Diego State over
Charleston and we now are taking Boise State over Northwestern. I had both of these teams ranked during the
season, so I expect a close game. Not
many have the winner here beating UCLA, so the stakes here seem pretty
low. Still, I’m rooting for the Broncos.
In other good news, my Dad got back from the KFC, so it’s
dinner time!!!!
