I know there were 4 games going on this evening, but I don’t think I can remember a single thing about 3 of them. They weren’t upsets, so who cares? Let’s talk about the one game that was a blessing to Arizona Wildcat fans everywhere, Purdue losing to Fairleigh Dickenson. I watched every second of this game.
I knew Purdue had a really bad track record in the tournament,
but I always convince myself that maybe I can overlook that. I mean Villanova used to have a really bad
record in the tournament, and then they won 2 of them. Baylor did the same thing. Maybe Purdue will get to where those teams are
now, but currently, they are choke artists.
If Zach Edey winds up winning Player of the Year, this will mark 2 straight
years that the POY lost in the first round after Oscar Tshibwe lost with
Kentucky to St. Peter’s last year.
I can remember watching UMBC beat Virginia a few years ago,
and there wasn’t a lot similar between these two games. In the Virginia game, Virginia totally
panicked and got run out of the gym. In
this game, Purdue looked like they were petrified of shooting the ball. Part of that was because they were shooting
so bad from the outside, but FDU was just letting them shoot open threes and
dropping back on Edey in the paint. It
was bad. You could see their confidence
fading as the game went on.
My brother said that FDU was going to win at around the 5:00
mark, when they were only up 1. I wasn’t
so sure. It was only after they hit a 3
with about 1:00 to go that I thought, “If they can hit free throws, they are
going to win this game”. I’ve bet on
enough favorites to know that having more talent wins you a lot of games even
if they play bad. I figured this would
be one of those games, not unlike Xavier earlier today. This was much more fun, and again, I wish
nothing but ill for Xavier.
So, if you managed to minimize the loss of Purdue, you
probably moved up in the standings. 17
people lost their champion yesterday with Arizona, and I thought that was
bad. 28 people lost Purdue as their champion
today. Yikes. 43 people had them in the Championship. 81 had them in the Final 4. 121 people had them in the Elite 8 and 186
people had them in the Sweet 16. This
whole half of the bracket seems to be clearing a path for Alabama.
So, there was quite a change at the top of the standings. There is a 2 way tie at the top between Irene
H. #5 and Luis B. #4, both of whom have Memphis in the Sweet 16 over Purdue.
Also, everyone has lost at least 1 Sweet 16 team. The cleanest brackets from now forward belong
to 4 brackets (the 2 in 1st place + Michael S. and Pete J. #1) who
have only lost one Sweet 16 team and that’s it.
Amazingly, none of those 4 lost Purdue in the Sweet 16. 3 of them lost Arizona and one had Virginia.
After that, there are 6 brackets that have only lost 2 Sweet
16 teams. Only 2 of them were people
that lost Arizona & Purdue (Chun W. #3, Niren D.). The other 4 were Barack O. (Arizona, Iona),
Brandon B. & Jeremy H. (Purdue, Utah
State) and Pete J. #2 (Virgnia, Providence).
That’s amazing. I love it. It’s interesting to see what games cost what
people. It’s rarely what you expect.
Also, the gutless bracket by the seeds took it hard. They are 11th in points, but 71st
in net points. Good.

Memphis / Florida Atlantic

These 2 teams have to be salivating after that Purdue game. Both of them seem in line to have an easier
path to the Sweet 16. I mean, it’s no
guarantee they will, but UMBC didn’t make it when they beat Virginia. My ranking system is biased towards smaller
conference teams with great records, so I’ve had Florida Atlantic ranked most
of the season. Similar to Florida-Gulf
Coast, I couldn’t tell you what city they are in, and didn’t really know
anything about them until they popped up on the radar earlier this season. I know they play in the same league as UAB
and North Texas, who are two my other favorite teams that didn’t make the
tournament, so I’m hoping they do well.
Memphis strikes me as being similar to Gonzaga. Expectations for them over the last few years
have been really high, and they haven’t delivered. This year, expectations are a little lower,
and they are coming in on a good run at the right time. It might not be a bad year to back the
Tigers. We will see…
Game 30
Kansas State / Montana State

I watch a LOT of college basketball. Pretty much every day after work during the
season I would have a game going on my iPad.
It’s really nice that games start around 4:00 on the West Coast, so I
can watch a lot of them. I love smaller
conferences, but I can’t think of a single time all year that I watched a game
from the Big Sky conference. I didn’t even
know who was good until the tournament was over. This is to say that Montana State is probably
the biggest mystery team to me in the whole bracket.
Kansas State is a little more well known. I mentioned earlier today that I think you
can make a case for Jerome Tang to be National Coach of the Year. KSU was supposed to be trash this season, and
they wound up being very good. On a
given night, they can not just beat anyone, but run anyone out of the gym. We’ll see if that translates to the tournament.
Game 31
Indiana / Kent State

I say this every year, but it’s true. As an alumnus of a MAC school, I am obligated
upon penalty of having my degree revoked to pick a MAC school to win a 1st
round game. Luckily for me, I think that
Kent State is very good and totally could pull the upset here. Indiana has been inconsistent this
season. Early in the season, I thought
they were top 5 good. At other times, I
thought they were in danger of not making the tournament at all.
Something my brother pointed out that I never really
considered. Kent State are the Golden
Flashes, but their mascot is an eagle.
What about an eagle is a flash? I
never gave it any thought before. It’s a
pretty small subset of schools whose
character mascot is different than the name of the mascot. There are some Ivy League schools that are,
like Harvard and Dartmouth. Stanford is
the Cardinal, but their mascot is a tree.
I couldn’t think of too many more.
Not relevant to this game, just something I thought was interesting.
Game 32
TCU / Arizona State

It’s the last game of the 1st round. Hurray!!!
It’s also a dreaded play-in winner.
They are 2/3 so far this season, and Arizona State was arguably better
than any of the others. That could spell
trouble for the Horned Frogs. I remember
TCU last year almost knocked out my Arizona squad in the 2nd round,
and they play in the Big 12, which I have said is the toughest conference I
have ever seen this season and they held their own.
Arizona State looks pretty tough. This may be the one upset of the 4. Then again, maybe it will be Montana
State. I mean they are a wild card…..
