2023 March Madness - 4 games into Day II

Fun start to the day today.  Michigan State pulled away in the second half of the game.  That makes a lot of people that I went to High School and college with very happy.  It kinda cripples the bracket I entered for Snoop Dogg.  I guess that should be no surprise.

These 7/10 and 8/9 games are good for separating the brackets from one another.  In the end, they don’t mean a whole heck of a lot, but they can give you a slight edge, making it less likely that you will need to win a bunch of games later in the tournament.  Now that I think about it, the more games you get right in the first round, the more conservative you can afford to be in the later rounds.  If you do poorly in the early rounds, you kind of need to take more risks later and hope they happen.  Unfortunately, you won’t know that before the tournament starts.  I don’t know many people that try to be risky in the first round and then conservative later.  It’s really hard to switch mind sets like that.

Yesterday I said that nobody had any faith in Xavier.  You know the theory about the logic of crowds?  If you have people guess the weight of a cow, one person can’t really get it, but if you ask 1,000 people to guess it and take the average of those guesses, you usually get really close.  Well, no one picked Xavier to win the whole thing.  Based on this game, I would say that the crowd is right.  Xavier sucks.  I can make a really solid case that the refs cost Kennesaw State the game.  On the last play, the Kennesaw State player was fouled twice on the rebound, and the refs didn’t call either of them.  I HATE Xavier right now.  They cost me a really great upset.  I hope they get routed in whatever game they play next.

I watched very little of the Baylor / UCSB game.  I saw that UCSB was up 1 at halftime, but by the time the Xavier game ended, it was already a double digit lead for Baylor.  It was never any closer from there.  Not a great game from Baylor, but they looked good if you only watched the second half.

The great promise of an upset went down in the second half of the St. Mary’s / VCU game.  It looked like St. Mary’s just slowly pulled away from VCU.  One of VCU’s best players picked up an injury in the game, so they may have doomed their chances.

So, it was a pretty chalky group of 4 games.  No upsets at all.  Boooo….  That means that the all chalk bracket is currently siting in 10th place.  That’s bad.  I want that bracket to be as far from the top as possible.

We do have a new bracket at the top.  April K. takes over the #1 spot with 17 total points.  Fun fact about April K.’s bracket – it was cost 2 points for being filled out illegally.  She had St. Mary’s and Connecticut winning games in the first round, but she had VCU in the Sweet 16.  I reached out to get this corrected (as I did whenever I found something similar), but didn’t hear back about how to fix it.  As a result, she lost the ability to correct it.  It wouldn’t be fair now that VCU is already out to correct it to St. Mary’s or Connecticut. I hope that doesn’t come back and haunt her.  Hers was the only uncorrected bracket left in the pool.

Here are the stats for the second set of games:

Game 21:

Marquette / Vermont

Vegas Line: Marquette -10.5

Picks for Marquette: 230

Picks for Vermont: 2

Shaka.. When the walls fell…  For those that get that reference, you get bonus nerd points.  This is the first tournament game for Marquette with Shaka Smart.  Shaka Smart went to the Final 4 with VCU over 10 years ago.  He parlayed into a huge deal coaching Texas, where he didn’t really do all that great, despite getting a ton of talent to go there.  I always kind of thought he was better served at a smaller school, where he could coach up mid-tier talent in the form he wanted.  I think one-and-done players probably are a little harder to do that with.

This region seems pretty wide open.  If you looked at the distribution from yesterday, 40+ people chose Purdue, Marquette and Duke to come out of this region.  Duke has already advanced and looked good, so Marquette needs to keep pace.  Vermont is no slouch, thus the low point spread.  Would this be a bigger upset than Princeton?  Based on picks, yes.  Based on point spread, no.

Game 22:

Iowa State / Pitt

Vegas Line: Iowa State -4.5

Picks for Iowa State: 147

Picks for Pittsburgh: 85

Ever since they decided to add 4 games to the start of the tournament, I have been a big fan of picking one of those play-in game winners to win some games in the actual tournament.  This year, the NCAA did something weird with those games.  In years past, the winners on Tuesday would play on Thursday, and the winners on Wednesday would play on Friday.  This year, the only play-in team to play on Thursday was TAMUCC.  Pittsburgh played on Tuesday, but gets an extra day to prepare by playing today.  Not sure why they did that, but it’s good for Pitt.

As for Iowa State, I typically love them and they typically let me down in the tournament.  Iowa State has had a lot of big wins this season, but they didn’t look that good late in the season.  If that sounds like I’m leaning toward Pitt, I guess I probably am.

Also, I am totally rooting for whoever wins this game to beat Xavier by 50 points.  What a bunch of frauds they are.

Game 23:

Creighton / NC State

Vegas Line: Creighton -5

Picks for Creighton: 160

Picks for NC State: 72

There are a few teams that computers really love.  The computers really love Connecticut, and they really love Creighton.  I never really understood the love for Creighton.  They started off the season ranked, and proceeded to do terrible.  Then they made a little run mid-season and the immediately were ranked again.  Then they went back to their losing ways, and now they finished as a #6 seed.  I don’t really get it.

On the flip side, NC State is really an entertaining team to watch.  I think they get overlooked playing in the backyard of Duke and UNC.  They were arguably better that North Carolina all season, but you only heard about UNC.  Both teams score a lot of points, so I’m hoping for an entertaining game.

Game 24:

Connecticut / Iona

Vegas Line: Connecticut -9

Picks for Connecticut: 214

Picks for Iona: 18

Didn’t I just mention teams that the computers love?  UConn is definitely one of them.  The big difference is that I actually like Connecticut.  I mean, they beat Alabama by 15 – in Alabama.  That’s impressive.  At one point, they were close to dethroning my favorite Houston for the #1 team in country.  They kind of faded a little bit in conference play, but they have come back a little in the last few weeks.

As for Iona, I think the only thing interesting about them is that this is probably going to be Rick Pitino’s last game with them.  He is almost assuredly leaving the school to coach somewhere else next season.  Whenever his name comes up in my house, my wife always asks if he’s “that vampire” and the answer is always “yes”.  I think he subsists entirely on human blood and is damaged by sunlight and garlic.

Can I make a comment about the Ivesco QQQ commercials.  I don’t like them.  They make it sound like you personally get access to whatever companies are in the ETF.  I mean, if I buy shares of an ETF in the oil and gas industry, I don’t get access to barrels of oil.  It’s kind of ridiculous.

Also, Bank of America, if people are on their phones at a wedding, I can guarantee 100% of the time they AREN’T banking.  That’s just insulting.

Good luck everyone!!!!
