There are a few days in the timeline of the tournament that I mark as my favorite days. One is Selection Sunday. Another is when the Gutless bracket in finally eliminated from all contention. Another is the day I can calculate the initial odds. Lately, it’s any day that San Diego State wins (and to a much lesser extent, any time Georgia Tech or Western Michigan ever wins a game). Easily in the top 5 every year is the day that Duke gets knocked out. They are probably the team that I love to root against the most in the NCAA. They are always good, and the national media LOVE them. Kentucky is close to being in this vicinity, but Duke is #1.
So, it’s a little strange.
Technically, this was not an upset.
A #4 seed beat a #5 seed. Duke
was wearing the dark uniforms. The
gutless bracket got this one right. My
theory about what conference is better at the end of a tournament comes down to
how many time a team beat a team they weren’t supposed ot or lost to a team
they weren’t supposed to. Going according
to form, I don’t think, tells you much about the conference. That being said, I think the ACC was not that
strong this season. At least, not as strong
as they have been in years’ past. Pitt
and Miami are still alive, but Duke, Virginia & NC State are not. Maybe they were just weak at the top, and a
little more solid in the second tier.
Honestly, they are 1-1 against form so far (Pitt with the upset,
Virginia getting upset). Meh…. I’m just happy Duke is out.

They are going to stagger tipoffs to essentially every hour
for the rest of the day, so I’ll update things after every 2 games. I’ll put together the stats now:
Game 35
Kansas / Arkansas
Vegas Line: Kansas -4

Not to jinx anything, but technically, we have yet to have an
upset today. 4 points doesn’t seem like
a lot. Both teams looked good in the
first round. I noticed that almost all
the games with the exception of Duke/Tennessee and Alabama/Maryland are in this
4-6 point range as far as point spreads.
I still don’t know what to make of Arkansas. They seem like their variance is larger than
most. Kansas is almost always good, so I’m
thinking this won’t be an upset. That
being said, 4 is not a big spread.
Game 36
Missouri / Princeton
Vegas Line: Missouri -6
Picks for Missouri: 10
Picks for Princeton: 0
Picks for Other: 222
You think that a lot of people don’t care too much about
this game. I think that not many people
are going to get points here, but it might be really important if you had
Arizona winning here. You could be
losing 2 points to anyone who had Missouri.
That being said, if you picked Missouri to beat Arizona, you may have
picked a lot of other upsets are lower in the standings. I just checked. 5/10 people that have Missouri winning this
game are currently in the top 100, including Noah N., who is in 8th
right now.
If you had Arizona going really far, one of the strange
wrinkles in this pool is this: Princeton is probably your best friend right
now. You want Princeton to go about as
far as you had Arizona going. That way,
other people will lose points that you have already lost. That’s a tough pill to swallow for most
people, but it is almost always true.
Game 37
Houston / Auburn
Vegas Line: Houston -5.5
Picks for Houston: 201

If Marcus Sasser plays, I love Houston. If he doesn’t, they could very easily lose
this game. That’s how different Houston
looks with and without Sasser. Auburn
isn’t great, but they can pull this off under the right conditions. I’m officially nervous about this one.
Game 38
Texas / Penn State
Vegas Line: Texas -5

So, Houston’s loss could be Texas’s gain. Texas is the #2 seed in the Midwest region,
and they could vault into heavy favorites if Houston loses. They still have to play the game though. This Penn State team reminds me of the
Syracuse team that made the Final 4 a few years ago, or the UCLA team that made
it as a play-in team about 2-3 years ago.
You keep wondering how they keep winning. You watch them play, and it seems so obvious
how to stop them, but no one can. I would
love to see an upset here. Not because I
don’t like Texas, but maybe it would be some karmic retribution for the Texas
coach choking his wife out and getting fired earlier this season. Plus, I like upsets.
Game 39
UCLA / Northwestern
Vegas Line: UCLA -7.5

UCLA is another one of those teams like Houston or Tennessee
that lost an important player before the tournament. So far, those injuries haven’t adversely
affected those teams, as they are all still in.
UCLA looked about as good as anyone in their first round game, but
Northwestern is not NC Asheville.
Northwestern is a feel good story, mostly because they seem a little out
of place in the Big 10 with the rest of the huge state institutions. They feel comparable to Vanderbilt in the
SEC. They have a long-suffering fan base
that comes out in force for them. I
still like UCLA here, but again, that’s why they play the games.
Game 40
Alabama / Maryland
Vegas Line: Alabama -9

It’s the T-shirt game of the day!! Maryland is the longest odds to win for a
team that I actually want to see win. Fear
the turtle!!!!! I don’t think they have
a great chance, but neither did FDU or Princeton and they are still alive. This could be a Arkansas / Gonzaga situation
from last year. These things happen from
time to time. Plus, the South seems to
be the wacky bracket. Maryland winning
would continue that trend.
