That’s the first round in the books. We wound had another upset as Florida Atlantic beat Memphis as a 9 over an 8. That was the best game of the bunch. I thought Arizona State was going to win for most of the second half against TCU, but couldn’t get it done at the end. A lot games seem to finish like that. They could go either way. It’s just who can make score in the last 2 minutes that wins.
It may not seem like it, but as a group we did better predicting
games today than we did yesterday.
Yesterday, we got an average of 10.24 games right out of 16. Today we got 11.02. I think that was because yesterday we had 2
upsets of teams in the top 4 of their respective regions, and today we only had
one. I think if you look at points lost,
I bet it was comparable. Unfortunately,
I don’t really track that.
Yesterday, we had one person go 14/16. Today we had 14 people go 14/16, but nobody
did better either day. That’s why the
top point getter so far only has 26 points.
That’s still pretty good. The brackets
that can win the most points from here out are 5 people that have lost only 2
Sweet 16 teams. Amazingly, Niren D. is
one of them. He is currently in 226th
in points, only going 16/32 in the first round.
Somehow, he managed to dodge most of the mines and still have 14/16 of his
Sweet 16 teams alive. That is a pretty
incredible percentage. It’s also why he
is currently in 226th in points, but 64th in net
points. He also will have a lot of
opportunities to move up. Good luck,

It should come as no surprise that no one managed to get all
8 games right in the South region. The
average was 4.34 correct guesses out of 8.
Dan D. was the only person to get even as many as 7 correct guesses in
this region.
The East region was a little more forgiving. I mean, if you overlook Purdue. Other than the top 2 brackets, it was pretty
much all chalk. Only FDU and FAU scored
upsets. Still, no one went 8/8. There were 15 people that managed to go 7/8,
and all of them missed Purdue. The average
for this region was 5.27 correct guesses.
The Midwest region didn’t have any big upsets in it, so it
was even easier to predict than the other two regions. It really was Pitt and Penn State only. Even with that, we only got 5.53 correct
guesses on average. The biggest
difference was that 10 people managed to go 8/8 here.
Finally, the West region, which was widely thought to be the
hardest region had all chalk. You’d
think we would do better with that than we did.
We only got 6.11 correct guesses in this region. That’s really good, but there were no
upsets. 16 people went 8/8 here.

Obviously, you want to be doing better in the latter ranking
than the former.
Starting tomorrow, games are all worth 2 points each. They are scheduling them like this: 1 full game,
then another full game, then the last 6 games going off every hour to stagger
them for the rest of the day. That makes
things kinda hard to update, but I’ll try my best.

Virginia was supposed to be in this game, but they are
choking dogs (except for the one year where they won it all). I am not disappointed by this. I am 100% rooting for San Diego State. Unfortunately, SDSU doesn’t have that great
of a track record in this tournament, so winning 2 or more games would be quite
a breakthrough. Plus, I only managed to
get to one SDSU game this season, so I have some guilt associated with
that. I should get to more games at
Viejas Arena. They are really fun.
