It looks like the curse of the T-shirt is back after a 1-day hiatus. I don’t know why I’m surprised. By my own definition, I’m picking the team that has the longest shot at winning that I actually want to win. Most days, that team is more likely to get crushed than it is to win. Such was the case today with Maryland. Alabama avoided the fate of Purdue and Kansas and made it to the Sweet 16. I’d love to say that Houston and Alabama are on a collision course, but there are soooo many games to go before we get there.
So, no one went 8/8 today.
I haven’t even looked at the actual numbers and I know that’s true. No one had Princeton in the Sweet 16. I was looking at the standings, and I think
it is a good example of why my pool is better than most. In most pools, what you would get is essentially
just the points, and maybe something that says the maximum number of points
they can get. That would really be misleading
right now. There are 4 people with 37
points sitting in the top 4 spots based only on points. 2 of the 4 are missing
both of their championship teams. 1 is
missing its champion. The 4th
is only missing one team in the finals.
They are 81st, 162nd, 196th and 196th
in net points right now. It’s entirely
possible that all 4 of these brackets have already been mathematically eliminated
from 1st place. You wouldn’t
know that based on only the points. They
have done a great job picking the coin flip games, but they’ve missed on the
key games like Purdue and Kansas. That matters
way more than the games played on the opening weekend.
I shouldn’t be too surprised at this, but today was tough to
predict for some specific places. As I mentioned,
no one had Princeton. Only 6 people got
Arkansas. Tennessee was kind of a coin
flip, but it was a coin flip where a lot more people picked heads and it came
up tails. That hurt people. As a result, the best anyone did today was go
6/8. Only 20 people managed to do
that. I feel kind of bad for people like
Kristin G. and Michelle L. #3. They got
6/8, but they lost Kansas as their champion.
That sucks. They were so good everywhere
else. The average points won today was
8.68, which is pretty low, considering only 3 teams shouldn’t be there based on
the seeds.
We have more games tomorrow, so I’m hoping for even more
chaos – especially since my Houston squad is safely through to the next
round. I was looking at the games
tomorrow, and there are only 3 teams that got there via upset. Of those 3, 2 of them play each other (FDU
vs. FAU). The other upset is play-in
winner Pitt. Everything else is strictly
by the seeds.

Looking at the cleanest brackets from here on, the best
anyone has is still missing another Sweet 16 team and at least one Great 8
team. There are 13 teams like this.
Tomorrow looks like it’s going to be a ton of close
games. I guess that’s what you get when
it’s mostly by the seeds. 7/8 games have
point spreads of less than 5 points. The
one outlier is FAU / FDU. I’ll preview
that one tomorrow.
Tomorrow they are staggering the games the same way they did
today. They are starting everyone with
Pitt / Xavier, followed by Kansas State / Kentucky. Then they go off every hour after that. That seems to work. I get to watch virtually all of the second
half of every game, which is nice.

Xavier can pound sand.
They should not be here. This
should be a Pitt / Kennesaw State game. Unfortunately,
the refs decided that two people grabbing a rebounder by the arms is not a foul
anymore. Seriously, if there is any
karmic justice in the world, Pitt will cruise to the easiest of all possible
victories. That makes this game an easy
choice for the t-shirt curse. I mean,
FDU is a bigger long shot, but I’ve already worn that one. Plus, I don’t care if they win or not at this
point. They’ve done what I wanted them
to do. Anything else is gravy for them. I like this Pitt team, and Xavier has a
clinical case of dysphagia when it comes to the post season. I hope they get the help they need – next season.
