3/4 Done with the first round

We are half way done with the games today, and Niren D. is back on top.  We wound up with 1/2 of the games finishing with the lower seeded team winning, capped off by Oregon beating Wisconsin to set up a UC Irvine / Oregon second round game.  That also means that at least one double digit seed will make the Sweet 16.  Whoever wins that may be tagged as the Cinderella of the tournament.  Then again, there are plenty of games left.  Maybe someone else will claim that title.

As for our overall production, it was a little harder to predict these games.  The average amount of points won through these 8 games was 5.16.  The median was 5.  We only had 3 brackets go 8/8: Alex P. (3rd place), Steve Dz. (9th place) and Todd K. #3 (15th place).

We still haven’t had anyone lose a team they had in the Championship game.  That’s pretty surprising.  There’s almost always someone that goes crazy and picks someone like Marquette to get that far, but not this year.  Either we, as a group, are getting more savvy with the picks or this tournament has been pretty easy to predict.

There was more carnage today than yesterday.  We are left with only 18 entries that have yet to lose a Sweet 16 team.  59 additional brackets have lost only one Sweet 16 team.  At the end of yesterday, about 2/3 of the field fell into one of those two categories.

To demonstrate how few points have actually been lost so far, there are 192 possible points.  The bracket that looks the worst currently has only accounted for 54 of those points.  Nick I. unfortunately has lost 2 Final 4 teams (Arizona State, Kansas State), but neither of them were going to the Championship game, so this bracket is still very much alive.

Here are the overall standings:

There are 4 more games about to start, so here are the details:

Picks for Utah State: 137
Picks for Washington: 90
Vegas Line: Utah State -3

This happens to be the 8/9 game with the biggest Vegas Line.  The other three were 1 or 2 point spreads, so that’s good seeding by the committee, I guess.  It should come as no surprise that I am going to pull for Utah State, given they came out of the Mountain West conference.  It’s possible to think that maybe they should have been given as much attention as Nevada during the season, but Nevada was the one ranked all season long, even though Utah State’s record was pretty comparable.  I watched Washington a little this season.  Let’s say I wasn’t impressed when they somehow managed to lose to a Cal team that hadn’t won a single game in the Pac12 season after just sneaking into the Top 25 rankings.  That didn’t make me think they were all that great.  They can prove me wrong today, I guess (as if they care about what I think).

Picks for Duke: 226
Picks for North Dakota State: 1 (J. Mack #3)
Vegas Line: Duke -26.5

It’s my afternoon t-shirt game!  So far, every team that I’ve given the T-shirt treatment to has got clobbered early and often.  This one promises to be no different.  I still can’t ever root for Duke.  They are the Yankees or the Patriots.  Yuck….  No thanks.  I think they are arguably the best team in the tournament, but the best team doesn’t always win.  Come on Bison!!!

Picks for Houston: 214
Picks for Georgia State: 13
Vegas Line: Houston -12.5

This line is a little closer than I was expecting.  Georgia State is a 2nd tier upset pick for people.  So far, that 2nd tier hasn’t really made much noise.  If anyone remembers Georgia State at all, it is because they knocked Baylor off in the first round back in 2015.  The coach’s son was the star of that team, and the coach tore his Achilles in the conference tournament, so had a boot on and had to be wheeled around on a stool.  I’d be cool if they sprung another upset today, but it seems like a long shot.

Picks for Mississippi State: 179
Picks for Liberty: 48
Vegas Line: Mississippi State -6

This is another sexy upset special.  Mississippi State was ranked for the first part of the season, but has faded slightly.  Liberty is a pretty good basketball team, although I’m a little skeptical about a team that has part of it’s code: no private interactions alone with members of the opposite sex.  Maybe that’s the special sauce that makes the team better, but seems a little draconian to me.  Different strokes, I guess.  A 12 over a 5 wouldn’t be too surprising to see.  Actually, we’ve already seen it twice, and almost 3 times if New Mexico State could’ve made just some free throws or a wide open 3 at the buzzer.  I will be interested to see this game.  I haven’t seen Liberty at all this season.

Good luck to everyone!!!!!
