First round in the books....

The first round is done!  There were a lot more upsets today, but only one that I would classify as a “big” upset, and I’m not sure how big it actually was.  Kansas State was the only team seeded 1-4 to lose, and they were missing one of their best players.  All the other upsets were of the 12/5, 11/6, 10/7 and 9/8 variety.  Boy were there a lot of those today.  We finished with the worst seeded team winning 8 games.  That means that we got some separation in the standings.

For the last set of 4 games, we had an average of 2.63 games correct with only 22 people going 4/4.  For the afternoon slate of 8 games, we averaged 5.18 games right, with only 2 people going 8/8 (Josiah T. #2, J. Mack #2).  For the entire day, our average was 10.34 games right.  The best guessers on the day were Josiah T. #2 and Steve Dz who both went 15/16.

We have a clear leader in the clubhouse with 1/6 of the game done.  Congratulations to Niren D.  He went 29/32 to lead the field by 1.  Josiah T.#2 comes in second with 28/32.  After that, there are 5 people tied with 27.  On average, we got 22.04 games right out of 32.

It’s a bit of an arbitrary title, but the sheet that moved up the most in the standings is Mike S. #1.  He started the day in 201^st place and finished in 71^st after going 13/16.  It’s arbitrary because in order to do well in a stat like this, you have to start from way back.  The biggest dropper was Ben J. #2 who went from 49^th to 189^th after logging a less-than-stellar 7/16 performance.  All is not lost.  Despite a run of upsets today, still not one person has lost a team they had in the Championship game.  I would have taken really long odds against that at the start of the tournament.  That means almost everyone probably has some chance of winning still.

In the East region, we had 4 people go 8/8 (Scott K. #2, J. Mack #2, Irene H. #4, Max A. #2).  In the West region, we had 8 people go 8/8 (Niren D., Brian K., Kirt R. #1, Daisy N. #6, Becky H., Harrell R. #1, Harrell R. #2, Harrell R. #3).  In the South region, we only had 2 people go 8/8 (Alex P., Howard S.).  Finally, in the Midwest region, we had 7 people go 8/8 (Niren D., Josiah T. #2, James G. #1, J. Mack #2, Ben J. #1, Stefon K., Jackson I.).  Good job everyone!!!

Only 6 people managed to get through the first round without losing a Sweet 16 team.  Those people are: Steve Dz., Alex P., Irene H. #4, Joel B. #1, Ray W. #5, Ben S. #3.  That is a very enviable place to be.  Another 42 people have only lost 1 Sweet 16 team.  As I’ve been saying all along.  There are a lot of points still out there.  A lot of things can happen.
