BORING - All favorites won today - most of them by a lot

I’ll take what I can get, I guess.  Outside of the first two games, today’s basketball games were a total disaster.  They were so bad, I wound up doing two things while the games were going on.  One, I finished reading a book of short stories.  That’s how little attention I needed to pay to the actual games.  The second was that I broke out the algorithm that Bill James generated to decided at what time / score you can call a game before it goes final.  For this last Auburn / Kansas game, it was about the 5 minute mark.

Technically, Auburn beating Kansas is an “upset”.  I put that in quotes because Auburn was not only favored to win this game, but more people picked Aubrn to advance than Kansas by 122 – 85.  That’s not good.  As a matter of fact, every single favorite in Vegas won.  That sucks.

These last two games did feature some things we hadn’t seen so far.  Bret K. #3 wound up being the first person to have a team in the championship game lose.  That team being Villanova.  Not long after, we had our first 2 people lose their overall champion with Kansas.  It was bound to happen at some point, I’m just surprised it took so long.

Most of the games today had splits of picks that were roughly 90%/5%/5% (the last 5% being “Other”).  These last two games were closer to 2/3 – 1/3, so there was some separation in the standings.

The average entry wound up getting 11.68 point today out of 16.  There were 25 entries that went a perfect 8/8 today, which, as I mentioned wasn’t the hardest thing in the world to do.  Almost all of the computer modelling entries went 8/8 today.  Washington Post, Ken Pom, Jeff Sagarin, Sagarin Plus, Nate Silver – all of them.  That stinks.  If I actually win with those picks, I think I’ll donate the winnings.  I really just put them in there to prove that they don’t work.  If they actually do work, that’s not good for the future of humanity.

We are still left with 16 people that can still get all the remaining points.  An additional 67 people can get all but 2 points remaining.  That’s a lot of points.  I keep waiting for a big result to un-cluster the pack, but so far it hasn’t happened.  The main thing separating people is how they did in the 8/9 games or the 4/5 game today.  The average point spread for games tomorrow is about 8.5 points, so that doesn’t bode well for upsets, but I’m keeping hope alive.  I hope we have a big one soon.
