So close!!!

I can NOT stand Duke.  They totally should have lost that game.  I loved the game plan by UCF.  If I am coaching against them, I probably play a box and one zone and challenge to Duke to shoot from the outside.  They have proved over and over again that they can’t do it.  Double team Zion every time he touches the ball wherever he is on the court.  Duke definitely didn’t look like a team that got more than 1/3 of the total picks to win the tournament.  I’ve mentioned a few of my favorite days of the tournament.  Selection Sunday, the day when all gutless brackets are finally eliminated, drinks with Szecho during the second week.  I forgot to mention how much I love it when Duke finally gets knocked out the tournament.  I really can’t stand them.

I think I’m going go ahead and profile the rest of the games for the day, since they go off pretty quickly here at the end.

Picks for Virginia Tech: 148
Picks for Liberty: 2
Picks for Other: 77
Vegas Line: Virginia Tech -8.5

The 77 people in the Other category are 64 people that picked Mississippi State, 12 that picked Saint Louis and one person that didn’t pick this game at all.  Given that that person is currently in 6th place overall, that could be potentially disastrous.  It looks like 2 points may make the difference between finishing in the money and being out at the rate wee are going.  I think I mentioned Liberty’s history in the first round, but I’m feeling especially salty after Duke’s victory, so I looked up some choice Jerry Falwell quotes, since Liberty was founded by Jerry and his son currently runs the school:

I must personally say that I do question the sincerity and nonviolent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
[S]o-called gay folks would just as soon kill you as look at you.
I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools.
(The Jews) are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior.
The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this (9/11).

I don’t typically care about the politics of a particular school, but I am probably never going to root for a school that was founded by someone that believes any of the above.  I’ll give the players and coaches the benefit of the doubt, but never ask me to root for a school founded by a person with that much hatred in his heart for his fellow man.  Anyway, that’s it for the non-basketball stuff.  Go Hokies!

Picks for Virginia: 222
Picks for Oklahoma: 2
Picks for Other: 3
Vegas Line: Virginia -10.5

Wow.  This looks like another all or nothing pick distribution.  No one likes Oklahoma at all.  I took Virginia to win it all as a value bet.  Nothing would compound the terrible-ness of Duke’s win as a Virginia loss would.  Sadly, based on last year, you know they have it in them.  It’s this kind of game that gives me (more) grey hairs.  I’m sure I’ll be torn if it looks like Oklahoma has any chance of winning.

Picks for Houston: 144
Picks for Ohio State: 19
Picks for Other: 64
Vegas Line: Houston -5.5

I don’t think I’ve been giving Ohio State enough credit.  They were ranked at the beginning of the year.  Mid-year, they lost their best player and wound up losing a bunch of games (which is why their record is not so good).  No they are back to full strength.  They may have under-seeded at 11, kind of like Oregon.  That’s not good news for Houston.  5.5 points doesn’t seem like too big of a gap.  Now that I’ve said that, watch Houston run them out of the gym.

Picks for Oregon: 44
Picks for UC Irvine: 21
Picks for Other: 162
Vegas Line: Oregon -4.5

This is the game where if you had the guts to pick an upset, you will be richly rewarded.  At this point, 2 points looks like a lot if you are trying to move up the standings.  162 people just have to watch and know that they are going to lose ground.  I like that.  Plus, I like both of these schools.  Of all my t-shirts, these 2 are easily 2 of my favorites.  My UC Irvine shirt is tie-died, and my Oregon shirt has the Oregon logo in the armpits for when you raise your arms to cheer.  This is great way to finish the 2nd round.  It’s the only game guaranteed to finish with a double-digit seed winning.  Everyone should know by now, that’s what I’m hoping to see more of.

Good luck everyone!!!!!!
