Saturday night summary


I was complaining all the first weekend about how there weren’t all that many upsets.  I guess the reward for all that chalk is that the games the second weekend wind up being really, really good.  I think the Virginia / Purdue game was the game of the tournament so far.  Purdue looked like they could beat just about anyone with the way they played today.  That game could have gone either way.  The first game of the day was only slightly less anxiety-inducing.  For about 36-37 minutes of that game, neither Texas Tech nor Gonzaga had any more than a 5 point lead.  Just fantastic basketball today.

What these games wound up doing was providing a lot more clarity on who is going to win the pool.  A ton of people were knocked out.  Many of you (myself included) had instances where one the games today was our last chance to leapfrog someone in the standings, and because we didn’t, we were eliminated from one place or another.  That’s kind of the way it goes at this point in the tournament.  Every game matters, not just for points you can get, but for points the field does or doesn’t get.

A few other notes.  There is no scenario where we will need a tie-breaker for 1st place.  There is only 1 scenario where 2nd and 3rd would require a tie-breaker, and there is 1 scenario where there may be 3-way tie-breaker for 4th place.  That’s good.  Depending on how the rest of the games play out, we may need that at all.

I said that I entered a bunch of brackets based on computer models.  As of right now, the best any of those brackets can do is 4th place.  That means an actual human will win this pool, which is what just proves that the machines can’t take everyone’s job yet.

We had our first person reach the unenviable position of being the first person to have all points accounted for.  Irene H. #5 can no longer get any more points.  She had a Final 4 of LSU / Gonzaga / Tennessee / North Carolina.  The amazing thing about those picks is that going into this weekend, she was still eligible to get all remaining points.  That’s how quick things turn in this pool.  It really could’ve happened to anyone the way this has shaken out.

17 people managed to go 2/2 today.  Of those 17, 15 of them are still alive for at least one of the payouts.  Unfortunately, 183 entries are now done and can’t get to any of the top 4 places in the pool.  That leaves 44 entries that are still alive for something.
