NCAA Day 1 - Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, Baylor exits the tournament early edition

It happened again!!!  Not only did a 12 knock off a 5, but Baylor extends its record of disappointment in the NCAA tournament to infinity years.  I need to make a note to myself that every year Baylor gets knocked out of the tournament at least one round earlier than their seed would indicate.  Yale looked pretty good, as they more or less embarrassed Baylor most trips down the court.  It seemed like Baylor was just relying on the superiority of their players physical abilities to win the game.  Of course it's easier to say that because they lost.  I guess I'll be wearing my Yale shirt on Saturday, since I want them to beat Duke.  Wouldn't that be fun?

In the other game, Virginia walked all over Hampton.  Not much to see there.  I don't think the upset was ever really on the table.  Oh well.  There are at least 3 other 16 seeds (although Kansas is pummeling Austin Peay as I write this).  In other news, Purdue is getting all it wants from UALR.  Looks like another 5 seed is on upset alert.

Unfortunately for the people in the pool, we finally lost our first Final 4 teams.  5 people had Baylor making the last weekend.  I think those people need to copy my notes about Baylor.

Since virtually everyone had Virginia, it's really the people that took Yale that went 2/2.  That amounts to 52 people.  After 6 games, we are down to only 12 perfect brackets.

Oh, in case anyone noticed, there are 3 additional brackets in the pool.  Someone sent them to my alternate e-mail address, so I didn't realize I got them until just now.  That makes the total 213 entries.

It looks like they don't spread the night games out as nicely as they do the morning games, so all 4 of the next games go off within 30 minutes of one another.  Here's the breakdown:

Miami / Buffalo:

Miami-Florida: 205

Buffalo: 8

If memory served, Buffalo did pretty good last year.  They also are a MAC team, so I feel compelled to root for them.  Plus, now I have a grudge against Miami-Florida because of that "The U" nonsense I mentioned a few posts ago.   Plus, we need a bigger upset.  Baylor is a good start, but I'm thirsty for more.

Indiana / Chattanooga:

Indiana: 192

Chattanooga: 21

Here's another good candidate for an upset.  5/12 seems to be a real struggle today.  I want to reward 21 people for having the guts to take Chattanooga.  Plus, I like to say the word "Chattanooga".  Good times.

North Carolina / FGCU:

North Carolina: 213

FGCU: 0

Shutout!!!!!  FGCU looked unstoppable in their play-in game.  The key part of that last sentence was "play-in game".  I think the game could be wildly entertaining.  I don't know what the over/under is, but I'm taking the "Over".

Utah / Fresno State:

Utah: 193

Fresno State: 20

As an alum of a Mountain West school, again I feel compelled to root for the Mountain West representative here.  Plus, I have no particular love or hate for Utah.  As a reference, here are the picks for the other 14 seeds: Buffalo (8), Green Bay (11), SF Austin (7).  It looks like the masses think this is the best chance for a 14/3 upset.  Let's make it happen!!!!
