NCAA Day 1 - Return to form edition

After the morning excitement, the first slate of afternoon games went pretty much to form.  There were only really two highlights.  The first was that Florida Gulf Coast was only down to North Carolina by 1 at halftime.  Unfortunately, they played the second half, and it was blowout city.  It was never really close at any point after halftime.

The other games teased some upsets, but the underdogs just couldn't sustain things.  Indiana looked every bit a Final 4 team against Chattanooga.  Speaking of which, that game felled the last of the perfect brackets.  It took all of 10 games to have everyone with at least some red on their sheets.

Without any major upsets, it shouldn't be a big surprise that 172 sheets went 4/4.  Everyone got at least North Carolina right (remember, it was a shutout on the picks?).  That means that there wasn't much change in the standings.  Here they are:

Let me check something...  It kind of looks like there's a "Play-in winner" effect going on here.  If you knew ahead of time, my guess is that the distribution of this game would look something closer to the Gonzaga / Seton Hall 6/11 game which is roughly even.  I keep telling people not to overlook the play-in winner.  We'll see if I am prophetic about that.  I think it's just about as reliable as the 12/5 upset pick.

Kentucky / Stony Brook:

For most of the time as I was entering brackets, I was pretty confident that this game was going to be a shutout.  Finally a few brave souls decided to back the Seawolves.  Speaking of which, what is a Seawolf?  Is that a real animal?  Is it a fancy name for something else like a chanticleer is just a rooster?  Looks like I've got some digging to do - unless they get crushed, then I don't really care.

Providence / USC:

Classic 8/9 matchup, and just like the other 8/9 matchups today, we went with the 9 seed over the 8.  So far, that has worked in our favor.  Not only has it worked in our favor, but it has screwed the gutless cowards that picked only by the seeds.  Suffer!!!!

Seton Hall / Gonzaga

You'd think by the pick spread that this was an 8/9 game, but it is a 6/11 game.  What that tells me is that the committee did a terrible job seeding this tournament.  I could point to several games like this (Kentucky / Stony Brook is another) where the pick distribution is nowhere near what it should be based on the seeds.  That's bad seeding.  Bad committee...  Do better next time.
